You know there is an unusual noise coming from the engine but you do not want to acknowledge it. Not yet anyway! Well the noise started on my 2.2JTD Eleganza (54 plate - 41,000 miles) about a month ago. Just a small noticeable noise but nothing much to worry about. Yesterday the wife started the car and it sounded awful. She popped back in the house and told me that the car was noisy. Yeah, Yeah I know. I will have a look in a moment. I started the car and she was right.
The small tapping had now matured into a fully grown adult knocking noise, like a tractor. 'Oh my god, have I left this too late?' I changed the oil and filter 'hoping' and 'Wishing' for it to disappear but it didn't.
I then searched the Fiat threads and found a couple of comments which mentioned about a weakened pulley on the crankshaft. Unluckily for some people they did not catch in time and have had their belt snapped, ulimatley having a replacement engine. I Contacted my local Fiat dealer and without confirming the fault and without seeing the car, they said it could be the crankshaft pulley, Costing £196.53 plus VAT just for the part - £86 an hour for labour and had to wait 3 days to get the part (overweekend).
I gently cruised my car 2 miles to my local garage had a chat about what I had found on the Fiat forums, they checked their first and low-and-behold a worn crankshaft pulley. A call to a regional car parts dealer and 3 hours later my car was fixed, running smooth for £143.21. Possible knackered engine overted.
*Check----The sign from the pulley after the mechanic showed me the old one was rubber linning, running around the inner wheel of the pulley had started to make its way out extruding from the inner wheel. Have a quick look!:worship:
Fella's (and wives), if their is a noise from the engine, get by the drivers front wheel, and have a listen for any unusual 'knocking' noises. It may save you in the long run!
Many thanks to all the Fiat Ulysse threads out their. You saved me packets!:slayer:
