Hi all
I have just finished a long restoration of a 500F and it seems I have one remaining issue - the speedo doesn’t work. I don’t know if it was working before the restoration. On the first drive there was a speed related (unsure if it was engine speed or road speed) clicking in the vicinity of the speedo that sounded like the cable was slipping. That noise was not there on the second and subsequent drives and the speedo and odometer don’t work.

I have checked that the new speedo cable was fully seated in the back of the speedo - it is. I have checked it is properly screwed into the gearbox and it is.

Are all the speedo cables for different models the same (other than in length). In other words, is it possible i have fitted the wrong cable and it isn’t properly engaging due to a different length/fitting on the bit inside the speedo or gearbox?

Thanks in advance for for any advice.

Photo of first test drive, for interest.

Ok, I have established that the speedo drive at the gearbox end has failed. Not the cable, but the bit that sticks out of the gearbox that the cable attaches to. It is very stiff when out of the car. I will pull one off another gearbox I have and see if it is better.

When you fit the speedo-drive from the other gearbox, make sure that it is "like-for-like"---the I believe that the ratios for the 126 gearboxes and the 500 gearboxes are different in the number of teeth on them
