YES DAZ IT DOES!!The h.u. extracts the info from the cd - less info means bad sound even with the best amp.Would you ever match a cheap record player with KRELL and APOGEEs ? NO!!

Slightly different scenario here though...

The HU does extract the data from the CD. But you can't really compare that to a needle on a record player.

A CD player as you know uses a laser, there is little or no difference between each unit. Even the cheap HU's these days will have 1bit DAC, this is more than enough to provide brilliant sound quality to 99% of all car audio users.

The difference in sound quality between a £100 HU and a £400 HU is sometimes quite minimal. They seem to just add on features rather than making them better.

Something like a Becker or a Nakamichi or an Alpine F#1 or a Pioneer ODR or a Sony XES then you are talking much better SQ.

But saying that some £200 HUs have very good SQ, as long as you don't use the internal amp.

The internal amp on a £500 alpine will be about as bad as the amp on a £100 goodmans.

An external amp will make a huge difference even if you have a cheap HU.
