went to *cough* halfords *cough* the other week - and was given a rough idea of what sound setup i want - he gave me a price of £1070 for the lot - though they price match and lucky for me www.cel-direct.co.uk are just down the road so ive saved myself £350!!
- anyway can anyone help me? - which infinity series are the best - reference or kappa?(6x9s) - same for components - which series?
- any recommendatins on subs? - he said sony pentagonal 10" - ive heard they are mediocre - loooking for 10" or two depending on price!!
any suggestions would be top!
cheers

Don't even THINK about those nasty sony 'subs'. They sound dreadful as the surround has to do strange things cos of the stupid shape.

What are you after? Listening clarity? Bowel splitting bass? Mix of both?

Do not get the Sony pentagonal subs!!!
Theres no reason for them to be that shape, it doesn't improve the sound quality or level in any way!
You'd be better off getting something like a Kicker Comp sub, their reasonably cheap.

Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

Right i got hold of some JL comp 5 1/4" for £250
2 x 12" jl audio Wo's for £200
then you will need 6x9's which i got a pair for 100 jl audio again then to power all that u will need GOOD amp dont spend under £300 for one DONT GET SONY!!!!!!

Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

As Tom said depends what you're after... 6x9's with a sub will give bass to crack walls (and your head). For clarity go for a sub and amp-powered front components giving you sound from the front...

You could also try.. http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk
Noticed under Special Offers they've got a Kicker 10" package with sub, box, wiring kit, and Kicker amp for £150; or a Rockford 12" with box, wiring kit, and Rockford amp for £250....

Hi m8

Its a difficult question answer this one, It depends how much you want to spend, the result you want? if you want loads a base or quality or both.

You can't go wrong with Infinity. Really good value for moneny stuff. The perfect 12" subs are briliant the Kappa components are mint and there amps are great too. (go for the kappas for the sake of another £50 the difference is amazing)

This is the best advice I can give you if you want a really good all round system

Get a good quality head unit
1 monoblock amp to power your sub/s
1 or 2 subs
1 4 way amp to run 2 sets of compnents
2x components

I went the full Rockford Fosgate way but I based my original sound system around the above list, The list has got a bit bigger lol

Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

first of all cheers for thge replies guys! - alot more than anticipated during the day? - have you not got jobs?lol!!
ok im getting one clear message - steer clear of sony subs - will do!! at the moment i wil be just going for a head unit and some 6x9s - probably the infinity ones - and some infinity components later on.
as for choosing subs - which wont be yet - just getting ideas - its sounds best to go for a ready made kit - like the kicker or rockford.
if i go for the head unit and then 6x9s, and then components - do i go for a sub? - looking to spend around £150 max on a sub - including box!!
cheers once again!!!!

Re: Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

Don't get the 6x9s first, go for the components!
After all you sit in the front of the car, thats where you want the music to be.
As for the speakers, spend as much as you can afford!
I've just fitted a set of £500. Polk Audio components and certainly don't regret spending the money!

Re: Re: Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

Agreed, fix the front of the car first. (cos they are crap!)

I have still to buy some new speakers, probably going to be Focals but I keep spending money on other things in the meantime.

Re: Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

As said earlier, it depends what you want for your money. I'm the biggest cheapskate in the world (but also poor due to producing 2 children) and went bargain stylee.

2 x Boss 10" subs £20
2 x 10" boxes £70/80
4 ch 900watt amp £140
JBL GTO 6x9's £40

It shakes, so I'm happy :) It could be a lot better but I could also be a lot more skint.

Re: Re: Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

rite so components first! - ok might just do it all in one go save the trouble?!?!
2 subs for £20 wimmy? good deal!
cheers again guys

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

Yip 2 for 20! It was not a typo. Car shack was the place. However, mine have now been replaced by the Boss Atlantis. Not sure on the price but they still sound good for your money

Re: Re: Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

just to back sy up,

if you want quality avoid 6x9s

go for either 1 set of components up front or a set in the front and a set in the rear

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

Talking of sound systems.
I have just upgraded my ICE setup with the following:

Alpine head unit 4 * 52w
Pioneer front door speakers, 13cm A1310
Pioneer 6*9 A6910

I have left the tweeters on the dash connected is that ok or shall i disconnect?

Sounds pretty good at the mo but will eventually add a sub and AMP.

will i need 2 amps, 1 for sub and 1 for speakers?
Shall i stick with pioneer or go for something different, what do you recommend?
Im on a pretty tight budget

Thx

Richard

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: sound setup - any help much appreciated!

i didn't want to spend much on mine cos people kept nicking anything i put in the old car. I think if you haven't got a big budget 6x9's are fantastic, and jbl's are teh best i've ever had. i had some sonys and they were trash, i was pleased they got nicked, shame it cost me £5 for a new door handle and 2 days to repair and respray the door where they broke in!

The most disappointing thing i've ever done with my stereo is the sub, i designed a box, the right volume, manufactured a bass port the correct size, stuck it in and it's pants!

12" pioneer sub and it's not half the sub my old boss 10" was. i think its the amp, its an splx and i dont think its filtering the sound very well. any advice?

Again it depends on the budget, you could always start off with some cheap stuff to get you going then refine it bit by bit to tune the sound to what you want! Thats what i would do!

Pay the extra and get the kappa series mate!! They are sweet!! However make sure you run it in as my mate blew his after 2 days they are bloody good but run them in first!!!

Sony

Why shouldn't you buy Sony, it looks great and sounds even better...
I know it will cost you al lot of €'s but so what...

Re: Sony

It doesn't cost alot, its about the cheapest you can go without going prosound or something un-named and its crap.

If you are paying mega £ or € then go Polk, Focal, MB Quart, Rockford, Phase Linear, Dynaudio, Phoenix Gold, etc... Sony is the cheap stuff.

Depends if you think £70 or £700 is expensive for a set of components.
