Righto, time for a bit of a rant I think.

I dont like Sony, you might say that I hate Sony, but I have one of their headunits, and I've owned many pieces of their equipment, multipul XM-222 power amps (they always seem to break and need fixing) and their speakers are pretty crappy.
I see these pentagonal subs flooding onto the market in NZ for very cheap. As far as I'm concerned they sound pretty damn bad. Does anyone actually know what Sony were trying to acheive by giving their subs a smaller cone area and some nice stress points requiring the surrounds to be butched out at the corners, making the cone heavier and subsequently making the diver less efficient? I've just been wondering it for a long time...

oh, and does anyone actually like Sony?
I mean, theres only so much silver and red someone can have in a car, right?

Matt

the new silver subs are more powerfull than the red
the red subs will 'move' more that the silver

but in my opinion the silver sub sounds alot better

I can't understand why so many people loathe Sony kit. All the Sony gear I've come across has been quality. I've got an MDXCA680X Xplod minidisc head unit and an XM502 amp. Had the amp nearly 3 years and the HU well over 2, never had any problems with either and the sound quality is spot-on. :D

Although the pentagonal subs do seem to be "all show and no go"...

i will always rate the sony head units, cause i havent had any problem with mine yet, its 4 years old and still going stong, its been used in harsh conditions aswell.

i also find them very easy too use as oppose to kenwood, which has loads off menus and functions

i dont rate sony speakers or amps at all, although i havent heard the 'silver' subs yet

The sony head units in my opinion are top notch, but the speakers and subs are absolute crap,

Wen speaking to a shop about speakers and subs etc, they admitted that the Sony gear is the worst of the lot which i do agree, they said sony speakers and the subs are mostly made for looks than for sound which is true. They do look pretty snazzy and expensive but they just aint worth the money.
I had sony xplod speakers for my first 6x9 in my old car, i blew em up a week later cause they couldnt handle the sounds, and my m8s 12" sub after 2 weeks is all crackled, but i do admit he didnt wear it in. FOOL!!

Ive got a cheap Xplod HU, Its ok for my purposes...really needs a quality amp and better EQ controls for the front and back channels till i'll be happy :D...but then again, when are yu gonna find 2 x 12 band EQ (even 6 band is OK) and good solid state amps on a car stereo for less than £100? Yure not.

Im also running one of those Pentagonal subs, and I agree, Its ****e. But it was cheap and im not running it in the best optinised box in terms of airspace so im hardly expecting brilliant performance, but it does what I need it for damn well, its lack of lots of punch compliments my overall setup :D

It looks great, sounds alright, but was cheap, so i didnt expect to be blown away, and I wasnt.

i am runnin sony 4" components and one of those P5 pentagon 12" subs.

personally i think they give a better sound quality than the vibe sub i had in there before, and even though i may b biased i think the sony and kenwood ICE i have in my lil car does sound very good, and everyone who has heard it has commented on how good the set up does sound.

i am very very happy with the sony stuff an am even gonna replace my kenwood 6x9's with sony cause the kenwoods were crap.

The sony headunits are garish looking and fiddly/confusing to control, by this I mean get into a car with a Sony Hd and try to put the volume up or down and change track successfully within ten seconds! Then try the same with an Alpine or Blaupunkt, nuff said.

As for the speakers, sound bad, cheap and nasty if you ask me, avoid.

Liam

Yeah, that all sounds about right really. The head units do the job and are pretty cheap (they still look terrible though). with my head unit, I'd have to say that the sound quality pisses me off the most, it sounds kinda tinny a bit lean in the arse end. and no, its not my speakers, I have a very nice pair of MB Quart QM130's which sounded much better when they were running from my 100watt per channel sherwood amp. But the amps I just dont get, with the last too I've had, one didnt like the damnness of the back of my uno and blew out the power supply part of things. the other just stoped, gave up on it after a few months.

but anyway, sony speakers are rubbish, I dont think I've ever heard a pair that actually sounded good.

and Mase Abarth, I think that I could agree with you, that most sony stuff is better than the mojority of Lanzar's stuff (Vibe) with the exception of the Optidrive series.
but I dont think that that is much of an acheivement really...

keep them comin,

Matt

Liam- Mine can do that! Its the most basic model, so hence theres absolutely fooq all to navigate! Volume one side, CD Track the other!

Im running Lightning Audio speakers (6x9) thru the Sony HU and they seem to have nice sound quality- but thats with the bass filtered out of those channels.
The Sub is just the Sub...it does its job and keeps me happy
