i have a snooper speed camera detector which is powered from the cigarette lighter but, i want to hide the cable away somwhere so i dont need the ashtray open all the time??????

i was wondering if there was anything in the front pillar i could wire it up to and if not could i wire it up to the back of the cigg lighter somehow?

Easy

On the back of the ciggy lighter are 3 terminal connectors that simply slide off. Run your snooper wire along the windscreen then under the glove box to the back of the lighter!

Re: Easy

Only do this if you are compatent with electronics:

I have the Bell Euro 550 dector, i wired it in as follows:
for this i need to Assume you dont have electric mirrors on your car, but the bravo that has electric mirrors has a 12v power supply that runs to under that piece of plastic inbetween the handbreak and gear stick. (this power wire is still present if you dont have electric mirrors)
Now to get access to the wires you need to lift the bit of plastic up from near the gear stick, you should be able to find a loom of wire not attached to anything, there will be three wires, two fat ones and one small.
The two fat ones will be postaive and negative (should be colour coded)
Then run these wires into the wire for the snooper. Should work well, and power only works when car is on.

Re: Re: Easy

Rowan, how well does that work? I take it you use it all the time whats it like around town and does it block the radar signal from police speed guns. Have you got it hidden or is it in view of the front window?
Sorry about all the questions but were are been sent on a training day next week to fit these bell radar detectors, and wondered you thoughts as a user.

I wired my snooper into the radio feed. Take the radio out and remove the two allen head bolts that old the funny vent thingy above the radio in place.

File a little groove in one corner of the plastic vent so the wire can get under it without being crushed.

Connect the wires up to the radio supply and put it all back together.

I have the snooper on a windscreen sucker mount and the cable just drops down and into the dash. Powers up when I turn the ignition on.

Best Options

I read this with interest. I am looking for a radar detector that is removable so I can swap it bewtween cars. Any advice guys?

I can drive around 1,000 miles per week and am a nervous wreck at times because of the amount of effort the Traffic Police are putting in to increase their holiday funds.

I am not concerned too much about detecting camera's, especially in towns because a) if I am not observant enough to spot a camera I am not observant enough to detect danger at speed and act accordingly therefore I deserve it and b) ANYONE who speeds in residential areas should be given 6 points and £200 fine especially around schools.

But its those buggers who are now settig up their vans on empty straight dual carriadgeways and fast A roads without any side turnings! I drove down the Fosseway (roman road i.e. very straight!) from near J12 of the M40 to Swindon and on one 15 mile section there were 4, yes FOUR, camera vans in operation.

And lastly, while I am on a rant - I lambasted a traffic cop a couple of Fridays ago. He was sitting on the top of J27 of the M5 (Tiverton) at 15:30, speed gunning cars on a dry, empty M5. Not too unusual you think...well 15:30 is the time that kids generally come out of school in a general state of excitement, especially on a Firday. My question to this young office was WHY THE F*&% WAS HE NOT DOING THIS OUTSIDE A SCHOOL AND MAKING AN EFFORT TO INCREASE SAFETY WHERE IT COUNTS MORE (I think I also added a number of things like useless, lazy, money making, etc but I cant quite remember!) He did explain that he was carry out orders and did agree with my point - so I pissed off sharpish as my red mist started to clear and I realised MY predicament! :)

Oh, and by the way, the Devon and Somerset police are using dark coloured Ford Galaxy's as their unmarked vehicles now and they are NOT in uniform either. Sneaky bastards!

about my bell

Well the bell euro is ok.
I turn it of in the city as it just beeps all the time. Its good for the road side detectors and gives plenty of notice, but there are loads of fauls alarms, like warning me when i come up to some sliding doors.
It has also saved me a few times with those vans with laser guns in.
It is excellent on the A505 road which i use quite a lot as that has about 8 fixed cameras on it, and a majourity are turned off, so i can go speeding down there without a worry.
But i might get a road angel to go along side as there are those DS2, which use a strip in the road instead of any radar. But i would keep the bell 550 for the police guns.
But so far i have clean licence, and it allows me to cruse at stupid speeds in the camaro.
But if i was assed to tune it up i could stop it beeping at me in the city, but in norwich there are no cameras in the city, so i cannot be assed.

Any way hope this helps

forgot to add.

The bell unit it's self does not block the police radar and laser signals. But i do have a deflector, which works along side the bell. So when something is detcted it send out a blocking signal. I 'could' have used it a few times on speeding cameras, as u can just speed past when they are turned on and they cannot get a speed reading of the car.
I have also 'might' have left a few police looking confused on the side of the road as they cannot get a fix on my speed, but 'i dont ever use it' as it is illegal to use on the public high-way.
But as i mentioned above it cannot block those dectors that use a strip in the road.

Re: forgot to add.

Thats the whole point of the strip :)

My laser detector has never gone off. Could be they just don't bother zapping me as I know all the usual spots and I'm pretty good about 30 and 40 limits.

Re: Re: forgot to add.

oh - dont get me wrong, i rearly break speed limits in 30's and 40's. But i dont see the point in doing 70, on a good dry road, in a powerfull safe car.

Re: Re: Re: forgot to add.

I agree! 30's and 40's are there for a reason and part of that reason is also to give the pedestrians a chance to avoid YOU.

The whole point of Mways etc.. is to remove the factors like kids running out into the road, parked cars, people on the wrong side of the road and the other dangers of normal roads.

The Hants motorway plod certainly used to overlook people doing 80-85 when the road was dry and clear. They would nick you in an instant if you were doing 71mph 6ft from the guy infront though!

I like the idea of variable speed limits, say 80mph in the dry, 70mph when its wet and 50-60 when its really shitty.

The thing that REALLY pisses me off is old people in fast cars (Merc SLKs etc..) who merge at 40mph and move straight into the middle lane at 40mph.

The law should clamp down on centre lane drivers, slow motorway drivers and f***ing foglight users.
