Hi all real newbie here. My predicament is this.I had the misfortune of snapping the timing belt on my fiat marea. Its 2001 sx jtd 8 valve version. I was travelling at about the 20 mph mark when it happened is there any chance that there wasn't fatal engine damage? If the valves have to be replaced etc what is a reasonable price to expect for that work or maybe it'd be better to get another engine any suggestions and advice would be very much appreciated. ..kev

i recon it's dead m8 sorry but get a new lump in it as i think that'll be the cheaper way m8 ..

Unless you are handy with all the right tools then the cost of a stripdown/exam and fix will be more than the value of the car. You also don't know what's been stressed, bent and bashed when valves met pistons. Far easier and cheaper to call around the breakers and (as said above) get a replacement lump. Why not a 20VT?

Thanx to all of you for your input. I am thinking maybe better to get hold of another lump. But I am wondering how to find out which other cars share the same engine as it would hopefully widen my scope in finding a suitable engine. thanx again .. kevinski

This happened to my brother's JTD 1.9 (we have one each). The pistons in this engine are very sturdy and will probably be OK; the valves will be bent tho'; cheapest option is to replace the head with a reconditioned one but you could rebuild the head; not an easy DIY but doable make sure you replace the water pump and all the tensioners and pulleys on reassembly; special tool required to undo the head bolts; don't scrap it these are good cars; cambelts must be changed evry 40000m or 5 years whatever is sooner.
good luck,
tim

Thanx for your replies guys. I bit the bullet and have had it repaired. To say tears were never far from my eyes (concerning the cost) is an understatement. But this car has been pretty good, this being the only problem I have had since buying it a year and a half ago. Like you Tinytim I felt that its worth keeping.Hopefully it will reward my loyalty!!.LOL
