My 2004 Multipla JTD115 has done 86,000 miles now, and the following is getting more and more noticeable.:(

1. Starting is never first time, and when it does, a cloud of grey smoke is visible from the exhaust
2. When flooring the accelerator, loads of smoke is visible out of the exhaust. (the amount of this is embarrassing at times!)
3. Not surprisingly, the engine oil is showing as low, and the warning "engine oil press. low" comes on round tight corners (obviously remedied by putting more in)

So it seems like the car is burning a fair bit of oil, given the above, but does anyone have any idea where this would be from, the likely fix, and a potential cost for a garage to fix it???

hiya , your mileage is really low so I cant believe its piston rings. I am not an expert on diesels but it could be the turbo.

Thanks neither am I, or turbos.
My thoughts (probably wrong) were that if it wasn't starting cleanly there could be a build up of oil in the cylinders?

Get your EGR cleaned out.
Look for leaks on and around your fuel injectors for the start up problem.
Is the engine lumpy when running?
I'm not an expert but my 03 Reg 80K 115 is having similar problems.

Working on one at the moment has the same symptoms. This one has oil going through the turbo but it isnt the turbo the oil is going into the turbo inlet pipe from the engine havent traced the cause yet. Interested to see what your problem is and what the cure was when you know!

Hi guys
Does anyone know where i can get haynes type manual for fiat stilo 1.9 jtd or on pdf. Im new on here so not sure yet how things work on here.

Thanks Lee

Sloppy, go to the Stilo forum in Cars. You'll get help there. Vince

It will be your EGR, bought my JTD a year ago and it was doing the same thing when i bought it, luckily had done my homework so bargained heavily with dealer.Did mine in about 4 hours, more competent mechanics will do it in less, make sure you have ratchet ring spanners if i remember right..and a lot of patience...and plasters.
Totally different beast now ive done mine !!!!

Thanks, I will have to get a garage/mechanic to do it for me, at least i know what to ask for a quote on now!

Hi, still not got this sorted, will the EGR fix cure the starting and running smoking problems? or as i suspect just the running?

Car runs fine apart form the smoke, just not as quick off the mark (pick-up is a bit slow) as it used to be.

Will have to book it in somewhere this week, as haven't got time/tools for DIY

Re: Smokin' Multipla JTD - £1100 to fix???!!!!!

Right, took this into my garage, and they have said it is the turbo causing the heavy oil usage, and it will have to be replaced. Also said they will clean or replace the EGR and all related pipes etc.

Trouble is the quote is for £1100.00 :bang: - lots of labour apparently, and I can't do it myself

From my understanding of how turbos work, they speed up the inlet and exhaust gases in the combustion cycle, so I reckon there could be something more serious, like piston rings, as someone else said? As this would mean oil getting into the cylinders and out through exhaust.

Garage say turbo is knackered though, and sucking oil out of engine, also it is making a whistling noise now which i hadn't heard before

Just dismayed at quote, so going elsewhere
