Just bought an uno 999 from one of my pals at work. Changed the clutch and inboard driveshaft boot, replaced the short handbrake cable then proceeded to take it for a spin. then I noticed the Plume at the back. It,s not so bad, disappearing qiute quick but noticeably smells of oil. With only 40,000 miles on the clock I am wary, but hope this is due to the wrong oil. I put castrol gtx in a maxi once and it was like a warship laying smoke. Is this a problem with the 999cc uno i.e. does it suffer premature leaky valve seals or do they have a tendency to get clogged oil rings and all I need to do is dilodge the grunge ????

Dave is the best guy to answer this question and he will probably reply to you within a short while.

Uno 1.0ie Start. Standard.

I am a schizophrenic currently so please bear with me whilst I try to get rid of the 40+ personality.

what colour is smoke, black would mean its running to rich, blue would mean burning oil ie rings or valve guides or headgasket, you don't have to take the head off these days if its valve guides.

I always have a nice blue smoke from the exhaust, except after doing enthusiastic driving on the freeway. It's caused by worn cylinder rings or whatever they're called. Cheapest to add a some oil once in a while.

40K miles on a Uno is low, if genuine.

If the smoke is blue it's burning oil, as mentioned above.

AIUI the correct grade oil for this engine is around the 15W40 mark - which is what the last tub of GTX I bought was.
(and is quite thick by "modern" standards).

It might be worth just using it for a while (and doing regular oil and filter changes - 6 month/ 6K miles) to see if the rings loosen up / bed in a bit.

Keep an eye on the oil level.

Also check if the flame trap in the breather pipe is blocked up - it might be pressuring the crankcase. More likely to blow oil past gaskets, but you never know....

Do you use Brake fluid? If you use more than normal, it leaks out and gets sucked in from the inlet and causes smoke aswell. My 1100 smoked like s#1t and could not get it sorted, Rebore it 1 oversize and install new pistons and it is sorted. Check your Brakefluid.

Cheers :)
