Hi, I’m looking for some advice on a problem I have been having with my Fiat, hopefully someone here will be able to diagnose the problem or tell me if this is a common occurrence.

About a year ago I noticed that when accelerating out of corners the engine speed of the car would build up but the car did not accelerate accordingly, giving the impression something was not connecting/slipping within the drive chain. I would then take my foot off the accelerator, reapply it and then everything would be fine again. The problem happened randomly a few times and so I took the car into my local Fiat garage and had them look at it. Unfortunately they found nothing wrong with the car, but then the problem went away anyway and I forgot about it until the last few weeks when it has reappeared. It doesn’t happen all the time, and seems to happen most when the car is in fourth or fifth gear pulling out of corners.

I thought it must be a clutch slippage problem but have tried putting the car in the highest gear at low revs and maximum acceleration and this does not cause any slippage at all.

My car is a 57Reg Grande Punto 1.4tjet and has a longlife exhaust system fitted to it. It has only done 28000 miles and is driven reasonably hard but in a sensible manner.

If anyone could shed any light on this problem I would very much appreciate it!

Thanks

Steve

My money would still be on the clutch, if not worn then maybe not getting full pressure applied to the driven plate from the pressure plate, maybe sticking on the input shaft splines.. or a hydraulics problem, either way, only thing you can do is strip it to see / check / fix.

Thanks for your reply to my message, hope you don't mind me asking some further questions:

Would a problem of this nature be covered by the third year of my Fiat Warranty?

Is this a problem that is common on this car do you know?

Thanks

Steve
