General skydome exploded !!!

today my wife called me and told me that the skydome exploded with no reason !!!
now ı'm taking the car to service for repalcement and to find out the reason.
this is a big shock for me. is the skydome dangerous?

Wow.....very nasty.....a real shock for your wife.
Renault are having lots of problems with their Megane and exploding rear windows.
I think it's to do with the heat treatment to 'toughen' the glass.

wooow thats crazy. Yeah I would agree something to do with heat treatment looks like its had a lot of shock. Similar things happen when you heat it up and cool it fast and vice versa.

fiat service told me that an object hit the skydome and made the wind protector in the front open and it destroyed the skydome...
i'm not satisfied with this answer but there is nothing i can do right now.
my insurance will cover the damage.
but there is sth wrong with the skydome...

That's pretty nasty.. but it could have been worst - at least it didn't shatter into pieces and into the car - hope it gets sorted out soon

you really believe that if she had done "something" wrong she would tell you....??? ....women......things just happen.....

Anyway,....before you start shouting about something wrong with the skydome you must first explain what exactly happened, how the wind protector was found open, was the car moving?, etc.....ask you wife to tell you all these and tell us,.......because things don't just happen....also I would like to know if the back part of the skydome is also damaged.....(the one that does not open....

we came home form work (8km) in 20 minutes.
the car was in front of my house. my wife was waiting for me in the car.
engine was working and no attemp was made to open the skydome.
she was just waiting for me in the car. no radio, no ac, no rain....
the weather was nice. (about 10 degrees at that time).
any questions? i still couldnt understand the reason and still trying to solve it

Blimey, if my top window exploded whilst standing still for no reason, I'd tell Fiat to get to f*** and fix it immediately not take it out of my insurance!

Typical of car manufacturers to take no interest in possible faults.

Any chance that something fall on the glass ? because from the photo and what I can see the aft part is ok.....so if it was a matter of treatment for the glass strength etc,.....should happen also on the rear part.....I guess....

dealers opinion :
- an object hit the glass and it broke down, at the same time wind protector freed because only the glass keeps it closed. and wind protectors side holders elevated and broke the glasses both sides.
very interesting and not satisfying. i will go to my dealer tomorrow and see if wind protector is opening actively or just opening freely by skydomes rear movement.

Sorry guys but that sounds feasible to me. Toughened (heat treated) glass which I assume is what the skydome is made of explodes in to a million pieces when damaged sufficiently. It appears to be laminated which holds all the bits together. It looks like it could have been hit by a stone or something and you see the result. As sporty said, was the car just sitting in a car park with no possibility of the glass being hit or was the car being driven?
