Hello,
I was driving home yesterday and suddenly the I couldn't get the car to go into any gear with the engine running.
I assumed a broken clutch cable but it was ok.
I adjusted the clutch cable and got the car to into gear but 10 minutes later it stopped going into gear again.
For the last week there has been a rattling sound when the clutch was out (pedal up) which went away when depressing the pedal.

Does this sound like new clutch time?-there was no slipping prior to this.
I've had a quote of £250 for the job - is this reasonable? - I'm near Dartford in Kent
I do have a new replacement clutch cable - is it worth fitting this first if the old one isn't broken?

I've looked at the DIY guide here
https://www.fiatforum.com/cinquecento-seicento-guides/134271-how-change-clutch-cinquecento-sporting-1-1-ohc-engine.html

would this also apply to the siecento 1.1 sporting?

Many thanks for any help
Ian

Adjust it again, and retry. Check your adjuster hasnt moved or broken. clutchs deterriorate over time, it wont just go like that, has to be mechanism, in my opinion.

The rattle noise is the clutch release bearing, its gone, may just need new bearing, but clutches are cheap and a garage should supply and fit for around £160 tops. wouldnt pay any more myself, but then again i would do it myself,

Mnay thanks for all the replies, how do I check the clutch fork? the lever on the end of the cable is moving when the pedal is pressed.

the leaver that you see moving is it turning the little metal bar it goes onto?it should be good and tight and turn that bar that goes into the gearbox housing,
i had a very simular problem before

My friends fiesta had a rattly release bearing and after adjusting the clutch the rattle went, we dont know how or why but but his clutch is fine now, and hes having exact same problem as you, your clutch is fine, its your operating mechanism thats gone wrong :)

Thanks for the reply.
The connection is tight and moving the bar so looks ok.
Presumably, if the problem is mechanical, it could still be inside the bellhousing which would still mean the gearbox coming out.
I think I'll have a go myself-twenty plus years ago I used to do a lot of work on cars but got fed up laying on the ground.

i believe it is a clutch issue. if its worn that thin ajusting your clutch would work for a bit then it would just unajust again.. your right though you will have to take off the gearbox. and you may as well do the clutch then anyway. also any good clutch kit should come with a release bearing

These cars use a plastic release bearing, its possible its overheated and pushed through the tines.

Its a gearbag out job whatever, so start there and I suspect you'll find worn/broken tines and a lump of melted plastic where the release bearing was.

Cheers

this is like what happened me, on the end of that bar that goes into the bellhousing there is a thing (sorry cant think of the name of it) but its what pushes and pulls the release bearing in and out, on a cinq i had a while ago this had worn and bent, so best bet is to get the box out, cheeck that and do the clutch while you have the box out

Thanks for all the advice.
The problem was indeed a disintegrated release bearing and a bent clutch fork.
Replacement clutch is in but now I cant get it into fifth gear ggrrrrhhh.

After i had my box out i had trouble finding 5th it had moved to the left.. Go through 1st 3rd and 5th you should be able to find it, its there somewhere :)
