I went and bought myself a universal fit backbox yesterday, praying it wouldn't be too loud.

It was £99 from my local Motorspares (They had some £59 Rage copies, but I reckoned they'd be really loud) and it's called "Custom Chrome Racing" Which is a bit gay, cos there's nothing custom about a universal backbox! Anyway, I reckon it looks pretty cool!

It was booked in to get fitted tomorrow, but the guy wanted £50 !

So I thought I'd give it a go, and even though it was a little fiddly, managed, with complete success to fit it myself this evening! :D I'm chuffed to bits with it, and THANK FCUK It's really not a lot louder than standard! I'm guessing it's bacause, unlike a custom straight-through exhaust, removing the backbox still leaves two other silencers after the cat.

Anyhoo, here's how it was before (Not too pretty!)

And here's the new one:

(I love the way you can see it through the wheel!!

Fitting it really was easy, I was worried it wouldn't fit too well, but it really does fit like a glove, and doesn't knock on anything (Very small slither cut off the lowest lip of the bumper)

did you just cut the old back box off and use a new piece of pipe?

i know for certain thats what i did, and i would say the same goes for Ben as im sure that all bravo exhaust systems are single piece from the cat back so its a necessity.

if your going to do it, just make sure you seal the joins properly, mines started to blow already so im gonna go at it again before Donny south

What do you seal it with?

erm my bro got me this stuff from his work (apprentice engineer) im going to dig it out tomorrow as its blowing so ill let you know what ive used, just let it cure properly, otherwise it really smells!!!

I used specific exhaust assembly putty. It sets hard in the heat of the exhaust when you run the engine.

Yeah, I cut the original at the point that looked the straightest, so if I didn't like it it wouldn't be too hard to reattach the standard exhaust again!! I was worrying about nothing, it sounds perfect!

When I 1st started it up I thought it was well noisey! Then I realised it was just blowing in loads of different places!
The pipe I got to join the fiat pipe to the new backbox was the wrong size really, so I cut some slits so I could stretch it wider. The result is little corners that don't seem to stay filled! Next time I'm passing a suitable shop i think I'll get a peice that fits properly!

I'll just stick that on the list of things to do before Donny!

hey ben ive noticed on ur pics u have got your mp3 player wired into the back of your head unit you got a blaupunkt one.. ive got the los angles model and i want to wire up my ipod but havnt got aux in inputs how did you manage to do yours.. sorry for going off topic

You have to buy a special Blaupunkt adapter that plugs into the back (There's another one for running pre-outs to an amp too).
Hellfords can get them in for you, but try ebay too.

anychance you know the diam of the orig Fiat pipe that you attached the new section of pipe to?? and is it the same 4 a 1.8?

they are slightly different. it depends on the inner diameter of your universal backbox, but i'm fairly sure that the inner diameter of the rear parts of your exhaust (everything behind the cat) is 50.5mm, so you can slide the new backbox inside if its diameter is less than 50.5mm
Add about 3mm to that figure if you want your new backbox to slide over the existing pipework.

hope that helps

oh, and if you want to try measuring the external diameter without cutting through it first, measure the distance right round the outside circumference of the pipe in mm and divide by 3.1416 then round up to the nearest mm :D sounds weird, but that should tell you your external diameter in mm
