"All they are asking for in return is a living wage... [that] helps make ends meet...

...unions rejected a pay offer which would take the drivers' average salary of £36,500 to £41,500.

I'm sure loads of people think that £41500 is barely a living wage. I know it must be struggle to make ends meet, and deserve excellent pay when you have all the stress of driving a lorry for a living...

I think its a f***ing farce tbh. Grossly overpaid as they are. At the end of the day the only qualifications they have is their HGV license and a Hazardous load qualification for the fuel they are carrying which takes 24hrs to get. Any monkey could do their job, no offence to any lorry drivers on here ;).

Then there are people like midwifes who spend 3yrs at uni / college to earn a paltry 15k. Or IT pro's spending 5yrs in training to have a starting salary of 14k or other people who don't get jobs at all. They need to get a grip and realise they have it easy. I'd be happy earning that sitting on my arse in a luxury lorry.

its a disgrace.

they have a no brainer job and get paid way too much for it.

what was the point of going to university when i could have paid much less for a class1 license and sat on my arse all day instead.

i think £25k is a fair salary for driving a tanker. i dont understand why they get so much more.

there is a fair amount of skill driving a full artic - have any of you who say "it's a monkey's job" ever driven anything bigger than a car that bends? Do you hold your HGV class1 - or haz chem license?

I'd like to see you try and negotiate one round a busy roundabout without giving someone trailer rash - or curbing it! Then there's reversing up to load bays within an inch either side and not hitting anything!

What about the anti-social hours? It's not dangerous for the driver - it's more dangerous for the people arround them the driver has the responsibility to ensure they keep everything safe.

Ps I am an IT admin not a truck driver (y)

no because they skilled if shell get rid of them all and start using agency staff who havent been on all the safty courses then we might. you might notice that there are lots of lorry crashes every day but not many of them are tankers

ive had a go driving a lorry round our yard with trailer on and it is rather difficult yet fun. it was on private property so i was allowed (y)

luckily i was driving it around the back which wasnt loaded up with thousands pounds worth of playground equipment.

its much more fun driving just the front cab :D

there isnt a shell garage round me as far as i can see for about 20 miles

F***ing tanker drivers, It really pisses me right off the selfish f***ers. Im sure they really struggle with the cost of living when they are on around £32K a year. I think i heard on the news yesterday, that they have rejected a 6.8 % rise, and they want 13% (n). I don't blame shell for not giving in to their demands, cheeky t**ts.

Police officers don't even earn this sort of money, and there job is by far more dangerous imo. Police officers will only earn this sort of money after about 9 years of service as a constable, and they are still fighting to get their 2.5 % pay rise.

My message to all tanker drivers - get a life and get in the real world, there are far more dangerous jobs than yours, and they are paid a lot less than yourselves. Stop being so selfish.
