I didn't feel that my last service offered very much value for money - 20,000km / 328.00 euros (13K miles / 220 pounds) - I just wasn't convinced they did very much for their money. I got the impression they just changed the oil and filters and had a quick look around, but they did even note that the front tyres were worn to the legal minimum on the inside edge

Firstly, I assume that the service schedule is every 20,000 km, but I thought there was a service indicator - which I was surprised not to see go on as I passed 40,000 km and I'm now at 41K. Is there an indicator? And if so, why hasn't it come on?

I'm perfectly capable of basic servicing and have done this for many years on many cars, but I normally use a Haynes manual as a reference point. I'm thinking about doing the next service (40,000 kms) myself and wondered if anyone has a definitive list of what needs to checked & replaced? Are any specific tools or equipment required?

The car is a July 2004 JTD (old shape). A basic list would be:

REPLACE:
Engine oil
Engine oil filter
Air filter

CHECK:
Front pads and discs
Check shocks for leaks
Check suspension joints for wear
Check rubber gators for splits or leaks
Check alternator belt for tension

The service indicator, which is a message in the trip computer/odometer window, should start warning you when you are approaching a service (eg service in 500 miles), but it depends if it was reset at the previous service. You can also scroll through the menu to find where it says 'service after', the correct sequence of mode/+/- etc is shown in the handbook. IIRC this only works with the ignition on but engine off (it's not the sort of thing you want to try to follow while driving:) ).
You should probably also change the fuel filter and pollen filter if applicable (at least I think that's what is recommended)
