Unless of course something has fallen off the drive shaft joint and is jammed behind the shaft in the coupling, something I mentioned at #2.:)
thanks Bugsymike. I did note your comment #2 but I tried it with a brand new driveshaft and got the same result😕

What you’re feeling is the inner CV tripod joint binding because of angle and plunge, which commonly happens during suspension reassembly.

The inner joint (the “tulip” and spider) is designed to slide in and out and only rotate freely within a certain working angle. When the hub carrier is rotated up to line up with the strut while the suspension is at full droop, the driveshaft angle becomes extreme. At that point the tripod rollers can bind inside the tulip, making the shaft feel locked solid.

That’s why it turns freely in one position and then suddenly feels tight or locked as you rotate the hub carrier.
It feels like the shaft is too long, but it isn’t.
Nothing is wrong with the gearbox or driveshaft. This is very common during assembly.
To avoid it:
support the hub carrier or lower arm with a jack
bring the suspension closer to normal ride height before tightening bolts
make sure the inner CV is fully seated in the gearbox.

Once everything is bolted up and the car is back on its wheels, the joint will sit in its normal operating range and rotate freely.
Thank you Mike. I’ll try again tomorrow - I’ve had enough today!

Edit* after some public "advertisement" they appear to be promptly shipping my order..

I don't know that company, but where a business has treated me badly I make a point of passing that information on.
Around about 1970 I bought a Ryal Enfield 350 Clipper or Bullet engine for £2 from a scrapyard and rebuilt it, the last part that needed attention was the dynamo so I gave it to the Auto electrical company that did the garages work, it came back half finished with a bill for an amount I could have bought a running motorbike for at the time, the other mechanics told me to tell them to shove it, I said no, I will pay but they will never have another penny from me and made sure everyone knew, so when they went bankrupt I was happy to go to their closing down auction.:)
I had similar with a computer shop years later when I took a Commodore 64 for a price to repair, a couple of weeks later they quoted a high price to do the work, which I declined, that same night I saw in local paper a guy advertising computer repairs, it was 9pm but I rang and apologised for the late time, he said no problem I will be here till midnight, bring it over. He was quickly able to repair it, told me a fair price which I paid and then said he had seen it before. It turned out the computer shop had taken it to him for a quote then tripled that figure before telling me, I told the repair man this and the shop never had any further business from either of us and subsequently I am happy to report it closed down.;)
The repair man later expanded and was doing work for a very large company with international business from his own expanding premises, we kept in touch and he was still happy to find time to repair a circuit board on a Mig welder I had.
I always say you may be able to rip people off in a big city, but the word soon goes around in small towns.;););)

I followed your advice Mike and I’m happy to report back that it worked! Thank you!
If I jack the front of the car up and let the drive shafts droop to their fullest extent it does still bind but over the range of suspension movement the car will experience in practice it’s perfect 😊. When I have a few quiet minutes I’ll do a long post summarising my experience and conclusions for the benefit of other newbies ( and myself in case I forget!).
