Hi there, I have a 1994 999cc UNO IE start (fire)

My problem is that I cannot change gear unless the engine isnt runing. Today I got stuck at a junction as the car simply would not go into gear and kept stalling and slowly rolling. The car seemed to think that the clutch was not depressed and kept stalling itself! And when I finally got it into gear, it made a loud crunching sound. The car also will not go into any gear without crunching now... if i can get into gear at all.

I honestly do not knnow what to do with this car, I have been quoted £150 to fix it, and I do not have that kind of money.

P.S I checked the haynes manual, which didnt make any sence.. so i promplty swore at it and threw it across the room (n)

Hi there. It's more than likely the clutch cable or plates. As the cable is simpler and cheaper you should start there. You need to check the height of the clutch pedal relative to the other pedals as it should be equal. Then with the engine turned off push the clutch up and down and feel how it is. It should be quite resistant and springy. Also check the clutch cable where it engages with the gearbox. There should be 2 nuts that fix the cable to the lever on top of the gearbox (RHS of the engine when looking under the bonnet). Turn the engine on and leave the handbrake on and your foot on the brake, put it into any gear and slowly lift the clutch. If it stalls the clutch is working as the plates will have engaged.

If everything checks out okay but the problem persists come back here and we'll move onto other areas.

Hope this helps.....................Matteo.

Thanks for the reply, electricmice. I will give that a go.

one thing I also forgot to mention, is that the clutch fluid was empty, I check these regularly... but when I checked it today it was empty, where as last week it was not. I topped up the clutch fluid, and it didnt drain or leak, but the problem is exactly the same.

When I press the clutch down, it still feels engaged and its biting in first gear when my foot is flat on the clutch.

When the car is not started, the clutch feels really easy to press, until it is pushed down 2/3 of the way. then it feels more 'normal'.

Also, when the car is running it is near impossible to put into gear. When it stalls, as i am trying to start the car with my foot on the clutch it starts to move forward as if its biting. I cant sit with my foot on the clutch waiting at a junction, as it simply stalls... :bang:

Ah hydraulic clutch, in which case scrap the cable theory cos you don't have one. That's me thinking of MkI's. Keep an eye on the fluid level because you could have a leak. You need to have a look under the engine bay and see if fluid has dripped from anywhere. You should have 2 areas where it could leak from, either near the gearbox (slave cylinder) or near the pedal (master cylinder). Chances are if the reservoir was empty you do have a leak and you will have to replace the faulty cylinder. Aren't cars fun?

Hi,
Had this last week, you either need a new master or slave cylinder, look for leaking fluid on the gearbox. If you have this then the slave cylinder is gone, or look for fluid on the pedals, if you have this then the master cylinder has gone.

If you have the late gearbox, where the slave cylinder is held in by two bolts then you need a Punto slave cylinder it WILL fit. I had to order a Punto one to get it to fit.

How expensive/easy is this to sort out... because im thinking of just scrapping this car and buying a new car, because of the ammounf of hassle I have had with this uno mk2 :(

Part cost me £50 quid, and took less than an hour to fit, bleed and get working, and i had loads of water-proofing junk in the engine bay to remove to get access to it.

If you want a 2nd hand one (can't promise how long it will last, although was known working PM me).

Just bought the clutch slave cylinder now, had to get a punto one as the uno one wasnt right. Cost me £40, so a bargain! :D

Cheers for all the help people!

just fixed it.. but the bleed valve snapped off :(

oh well, its fine for now.. I will just buy another one. lol.

have read this with very slowly taking in as mutch as i can. i just brought my 93 "L" plate uno fire home "999" and it has the same problem. will have a look in the morning to find out if i have cable or hyd' thanks(y)

Had same prob very short while ago as well...

Think Uno parts go on strike in tangent?

mine was same as this and turned out to be a leaking master cylinder, just ordered one £27+ post.
just topping fluid wont help in the mean time it needs bleeding like brakes do
