Technical semi automatic gearbox not shifting

Hi,
My 2008 1.6 deisel automatic gearbox (see picture) has a fault

it will not go more than first Gear on auto. When you put your foot on the accelerator and change the gear on Neutral it will change the gearbox and it goes to all 6 gears.

I've ruled out 1) expensive fiat dealer 2) mechanical problems with the gearbox since there are no strange noises and it takes the gears.

What could it be?

it NOT an automatic.. it's a "robotised-manual"

it'll be a sensor or similar issue,
should be storing a fault code.., but in the absence of any diagnostic kit,
remove battery negative lead for a few hours, it may well reset and work fine,
