It is said in this thread that new cables are around £26. But doesn't say exactly how it's removed from gearbox!
I've done that in Selecta and it was easy, so maybe there is something wrong with it?
You need to dive into your engine baythen pull up spmething like cable cover just before gearbox and use tool (spanner?) size (16-18 I don't remember) There is grey (plastic) bolt (looks like bolt but it's like bolt outside cable) and unscrew it...
it's more complicated to put it back because there is smal square hole and cable must fit it properly....

So I just need to undo the spanner bit (I know the bit you mean as I have had a bit of a gander) and the cable should pull out
