Hey I was at the mechanic the other week getting a couple of new tyres and he told me that my "top mounts" were completely worn and I should get them replaced. He called the parts dealer to try get some but they said they were dealer only parts so they couldn't.

I should have got him to write down exactly the part that I needed but all I know is it's the top mounts, does it sound right that these top mounts would be the rubber mounts at the top of the suspension? Is there an easy way for me to tell if these are worn?

The reason being that I had a look on EBay and found some of these parts for ~£30 each and was hoping to just buy a couple and take them into a mechanic to have fitted.

On a side not - I also have a weird knocking noise coming from the front left of the car when I take my foot off the accelerator while doing over about 20mph. It's a constant knocking until I put my foot back on it. Do you think that these top mounts could be the cause of that?

Also if anyone can recommend somewhere to get this fixed in London (preferably close to W4) that would be great.

Cheers

If it has power steering there will be a steering wheel icon on the dash.

It's very important you know before you order. Non power steering ones are completely different.

To tell if they're worn, jack car up at front with bonnet open. Pull up and down on the road wheel looking at the bolt where the top of the strut mount goes through the wing. Any relative movement indicates fubar top mount.

It's an easy enough DIY job (Haynes manual or guides) but you need a £25 coil sping compressor (machine mart, etc). Any backstreet garage can do it, but you're looking at big labour charges in London.

I'm pretty sure it does, I'll doubly check tonight.

I'll also jack it up and have a go at moving the wheel up and down. Should it be easy to move up and down?

I'd love to do it myself but I don't have the room or any tools here (just moved here a couple of months ago).

Hi all,

I can confirm it does has a little steering wheel light on the dash when you start the car up.

I tried jacking it up and moving the wheel but I was having trouble moving it up and down. I've taken a few pictures if that helps anyone.

Hey thank you so much. That is one hell of a difference in price there. Now to find a garage around to fit them XD
