Hi,
I've got a 51 plate Seicento S,in 5th gear it is whining quite badly.Has anyone else come across this fault and if so how interchangeable are the gearboxes?.thanks.

Check the gearbox oil level: chances are the box is running dry.

This will either remove the problem or put off the day of disaster for a while.

Check for leaks from the oil seals when you've re-filled: they're easy enough to do.

As to interchangeability, a Cinq Sporting box will fit with very minor swap overs. Don't even think about fitting the box from another 1100 (non Sporting) Sei: it's far more hastle than it's worth.

Eh. If the car is an 1100 non Sporting, how will an 1100 non Sporting box be a hassle to fit, or am I reading this wrong?

Cheers

They're different boxes on the 1108 SX and S to the Sporting one. They'll fit the engine fine, but you need to use the S or SX gearbox cables, probably modify the starter motor and use S or SX driveshafts. And you'll end up with a box with wet inner pot joints.

I don't know if this is true of them all, but was my experience fitting an 1108 S with a Sei Sporting box (which is a better way to go, I think, as the Sporting seems to have a tougher box, but still a real PITA).

Yeah, I can see the issue with changing to a Sporting box, but the OP's car is a non Sporting!

Eh?

I'm assuming it is MPI. But my Sei S 1108 MPI (2002) left the factory with a wet shaft gearbox. What these things are cousins to is an unknown -- to me at any rate. Certainly the belhousing is different to the wet shaft 899, and the overall ratio is said to be a tad higher than the Sporting.

Whether all non-Sporting MPIs have the wet shafts is a mystery to me, too. I suspect so, if only by the "tch, tch" sounds my FIAT part man made when I told him I was fitting a Sporting box.

OK,the gearbox was empty of oil so I filled it up and it all leaked out again due to the driveshaft seal leaking.%th gear still noisy after replacing the seal and filling up the box.The only box I can get is a Sporting one, will I need to change the driveshafts too then?.

Another option is to rebuild the box you have. You can strip it down and have new gears fitted at a gearbox specialist and replace any seals and bearings your self.

I have a box for an 1100 std Seicento that I was just about to advertise. I was going to use it with the 1242 engine I also have in our Sei Abarth, more power, higher ratios etc.... . The car has now been sold so I was going to sell the parts.

It came out of a crashed car that had done 8000miles about 2.5 years ago. I work in Italy and the box is at home but I could try and find some pictures if you are interested.
