Surely it has to assist with at fault claims. Insurance companies deal with whiplash claims etc.

Thats not what its for, normally to cover legal costs - i.e suing someone for whiplash you got when they hit you, defending youself in court regarding driving convictions etc

At fault calims, IE your negligence towards others, is what your insurance policy covers you for, not the legal services.

Hi, I scuffed someones bumper recently (whoops)

The sort of thing a lesser man would have done and then driven away but I did the right thing and left my details.

I was informed my by my insurance company that I would be able to pay the cost of the claim back and keep my no claims. I was expecting the cost of the repair to be £500-800~ which would sting but was doable. But upon ringing my company to sell how the claim is progressing they said they have paid out over £7000 already in higher car costs and have just authorised the repair shop to fix the damage.

Is this why insurance costs are so high? Because they get bad deals on hire cars? Or they needlessly give higher cars for extended periods to people who dont really need a higher car anyway?

The bumper was scuffed, they car was drivable I do not know how on earth they think they are justified in spending 7k on higher car costs, it sounds like they have had one since the day of the accident (mid may)

totally unreal.
Its called Credit Hire mate..... not much you can do, as soon as hire companies get a whiff of a accident they will sign the non-fault party to the agreement which leads to ridiculous hire costs.

It does seem a scam but not much you can do mate, Its not your insurers fault either.

However if there car is driveable you should only pay for the costs that the vehicle was actually being repaired. The rest is their own fault.
