Hi,

Anyone know a decent place to buy a second hand set of clocks?

2000'V' 1.9D with digital mileometer and time clock (not Rev counter).

Cheers,

MC

clock works, temperature gauge works.....(y)

.... speedo and fuel gauge nothing...(n)

sometimes the speedo shows up and tells me i'm doing 90MPH in reverse then nothing while i'm on the motorway

and the fuel gauge wakes up when you smack the dashboard but tells me the tank is full when I know it's not

The speedo and fuel guage are driven by the ECU.

Scudos are quite nortorious for poor earthing and it's this area you should check first.

Locate the ECU (drivers side in the engine compartment) and wiggle the connectors on the bottom. Remove the instrment cluster and check/clean the connectors on the rear.

Just seen your response KE ..(y)

Thanks very much for that, I'll try it in the morning - what should I be looking for  will the ECU be a small box or something???

The ECU is black plastic 'block' about 8-inches (200mm) square and has two rectangular plugs with LOTS of wires coming out of the bottom.

The most obvious area to look first would be the back of the cluster.

Cheers KE, have tried this tonight - found the ECU and 'wiggled'the wires out of the bottom of it - nothing but a few clicking noises....

Should I disconnect the ECU and have a look at the plug, etc. or is there anything else I could try?? I really don't want to shell out on new clocks if not necessary.

Is there anyway of testing the clocks I've got?

"A few clicks..." ... eek. Don't TUG on them! If you do hear some clicks when 'wiggling' them then there's a possibility something is loose - or a dirty contact.

Removing the plugs from the ECU takes some figuring out as there's a wierd locking mechanism on them. I'd be inclined to leave it alone for now.

Check behind the instrument cluster before doing anything else with the ECU. Corrosion of the contacts on the back is the likeliest cause.

Yeah I noticed the locking system on the ECU plug - looks very breakable.....

I've had the instrument cluster out a couple of times, but obviously there is just the big plastic plugs which are well sealed - can the contacts inside still corrode??

I do get some action off the fuel gauge if I hit the top of the dash hard, but it's not a true reflection of whats in the tank half the time....

A 'result' based on bashing the console is a result nontheless and points to something in the console area. I'd remove the console completely and check/clean all the contacts.

Cheers mate , I'll try that this morning - not sure what to use to clean the plugs though??

Try aerosol contact cleaner first. Failing that, use simple clean white paper as a 'scraper' to polish the contacts.

Any chance you can post a pic of the contacts?

should be able to tomorrow KE... they look brand new no corrosion at all.....

The fuel gauge was tending to jump about when i gently tapped the side of the removed cluster unit???
