Screeching noise after refuel

I put some petrol in today and when I got back in the car and turend the ignition the car made an almighty screech before it started. This worried me so I tried it again, turned the engine off and tried to restart but this time there was no ignition...just the screech. At this point I was shi*ting myself (I don't have breakdown cover) so I gave it a few minutes and tried again. This time the engine started but still screeched. I drove home and tried it again...problem gone, and it's stayed gone so far.

Could this be an issue with the fuel? (I was almost literally empty before someone says the fuel wouldn't get there that quick haha).

Hi Ant,

Firstly I'd check the Fuel Cap is on correctly, tank is pressurised so maybe there is a pressure leak...

If the noise is from the engine bay then i would probably check the Aux belt tensioner... Mine made a screech sound just before it ceased up... loosen the belt and check it free wheels smoothly....

Fan belt mate, they screech when lose.check your belt for play
Easy fix, undo alternator tensioner bracket and pull the alt so your belt goes tight :)

Ive not heard of a starter motor to screech before, they just fail to turn?

i think the clue is "tried to start engine, got the screech but no ignition" I have known the ring gear spin round on the flywheel, and teeth stripped.

the alternator bendix screech is a common fiat issue :)

normally it's in cold weather but can happen anytime. when the ignition is turned over the solenoid pushes out the middle of the starter to turn the engine, sometimes it doesn't retract properly thus it stays attached to the engine which is turning over faster than the motor should go.

I've had it on 2 bravos but normally in the winter, the screech normally lasts for about 1-2 seconds after the engine starts.

hopefully this is what you heard and I wouldn't worry too much but one day the starter will need to be changed. (mine went for 2 years like it)

Darren

@Darren yeah that's what happened. When the engine did start it screeched for about 2-3 seconds longer then idled fine (as fine as it does for my car, but that's another issue!).

So what would I have to replace, eventually?

Cheers for the info guys!

if you have got a bit of time take the motor off and make sure there is no oill on the shaft. in one sense it could be a good thing if it is the motor, at least its an easy fix

sorry, yes, the starter motor not alternator....

I broke my shoulder and the pain killers are making me go crazy (I'm blaming them anyway)

It's the starter motor, you can take it out and see if the solonoid is going in and out correctly :)

Darren

sorry to hear about the shoulder Darren, Is it the clavicle or scapula? Both painful. Had em both broken in my time

not anything to serious, smashed my ac joint down a couple of inches, tore 1 and a half tendons so just waiting on physio :)

the drugs are nice tho  little spaced out haha!

I think you will find dark lurker that it can happen any time, not just when refuelling! It may have been a co insidence that it happened to ant after he put fuel in!
