MG do you work in the motor industry or are you just ignorant?

Anon,

Before you start slinging personal insults around I suggest that you get some facts straight.

Firstly, you posit that dealers are raising their prices to counter the discount. So, do you have definitive proof of this? If so, please feel free to share. When you think about it logically, why would dealers do this? The scrappage scheme is designed to encourage sales in an industry that has seen sales drop significantly in recent months. And I'm sure other highly aware individuals like yourself & the "Daily Heil" would see this and scream from the roof tops about "rip off Britain" and all that, so they'd soon get caught out.

Secondly you say that buyers will be presenting a voucher. This is wrong. The money is deducted by the dealer at point of sale and on presentation of a qualifying vehicle.

On the point of the qualifying vehicle, you opine that it will be used by the cash rich wealthy to purchase gas guzzlers. On closer inspection of the details provided by the Government, this is not the case. The new vehicle must be, "a car or small van weighing up to 3,500 kg"

This will rule out most of those "offending" vehicles you mention. Also, dealers will only offer the scrappage deal on certain vehicles, so I pretty much doubt you'll get your local Range Rover dealer offering the scheme for fear of getting the pi55 ripped out of them.

The whole point of this initiative is to encourage new car sales (a valuable part of the economy) and remove old, polluting and un-environmentally friendly vehicles from the road and replace them with cleaner, more efficient cars.

The old vehicles will be scrapped and used in the very same way they are now; helping to recycle & provide cheap spare parts to the likes of us.

And ultimately, as you so clearly pointed out, you don't have to participate. If everyone is of the same opinion as you, then no one will do it and it will fall flat on it's face.

As an example, check out the link that Tommy posted regarding the FIAT Panda. The price of that vehicle hasn't been increased, as you feared, and FIAT are actually giving an extra £100 off. Hmmmmm, not much ripping off going on there, now is there?

Oh, and in case you wondered, no, I don't work in the industry, I don't work for the Government and anymore personally abusive comments to other users will be removed and further action taken as deemed necessary.

Thank you for your time. Please keep this thread on topic and good natured :)

I remember reading very recently that Ford (and possibly GM) had to put prices up a few % due to the crap rate of the pound against the Euro...so Mr Anon is partially correct with his sweeping, indiscriminate statement ;)

I do disagree with MG about the jobs thing though, if implemented as desired it will create jobs for car makers/dealerships but it will also cause job losses in other areas (factors/garages due to no MOT for 3 year and longer service intervals)...as I've mentioned above (I think lol).

Bangers keep a lot of people in business...just ask my mechanic lol

Well said Roberto, Personally although my car is 14 years old with less than 20,000 on the clock,I would not like the thoughts of it being scrapped.

"MG do you work in the motor industry or are you just ignorant?"

Can you elaborate?? Makes little sense you see, thanks in advance.

Roberto, a well stacked up and thought out post, it seems our opinions share quite a bit of common ground. lol

Matt, I see your point about the backstreet garages. I assume that the good one's will survive as there will always be a market for them as most vehicles run out of warranties by 3 or 5 years old and in this scheme the vehicles have to be a lot older than that. Plus, not everyone will take up the scheme at once if at all so there will still be plenty of clapped out alfa's on the roads ;) lol

I imagine that this scheme has massive jobs potential. From the production lines at the car factory to the production lines that make components to manufacturers of the nuts and bolts (which potentially could be made from the recycled 'bangers').

IMO the pro's outweigh the con's but only in theory and not practice so time will tell.

the scheme is only open til the beginning of next year so there will be a massive drop off in sales again at that time. The scrappage scheme is a short term measure for a long term problem.

Yes, Just a short term measure to help the car industry. They may well extend it if it is a success. I have had three brand new cars in the past and i kept each one a minimum of 12 years, Thats the only way you can get your moneysworth. My last new car was a Fiesta, I did not like it much so after 2 years decided to trade it in. The figure offered was laughable
Had I accepted ,2 years motoring would have cost me £3,000. I kept it even though I did not like it

The car manuafacturers haev been over producing for years. The current financial situation has only brought nearer what was due to happpen in a few years anyway. Vauxhall increased it's list prices by £1800 in January. The 2k subsidy is only available on vehicles at list price. A tennis match springs to mind - racket.

Are you sure that's not to do with exchange rates or other outside factors??

If you see here..

car prices were going up before the scappage scheme was introduced...

So it doesn't matter if you have a part ex, scrap car or a wod of cash.... your going to pay more now for a new car anyhow!!

Just a small point tho... a Ford Ka has only gone up £50, yet you can get £2000 off in the scrappage scheme.

ok... so your only getting £1950 off compaired to a new Ka bought in March.

The only way people can really comment on if the scrappage scheme is actuall worth it... are those looking to buy a new car and have compaired the deal they were offered in March compaired to now.

I priced up a Mk6 Golf TSi GT in March and it come out to £22,000..... saw the guarage bloke 2day and I can get the same car now for £20,000 if i scrap my ka!!

so thats £22,000 - £20,000 = £2000 saving!!

Yup... it works.. you save £2000 if you scrap your car!!! :)

I would offer him £18500.

Oh sh*t I'm in favour of this, yes yes it sounds great.

I see Mr (or Mrs) Anon has posited another well researched and well thought out argument.

Like I said, if you think it's a rip off, don't do it. Simples!

Personally, given that I need to save money as much as I can, the Panda deal is becoming increasingly tempting. Still need to drill down the math and weigh everything up.

Tommy that saving that you quoted..how long u had the KA? i thought you need to have had vehicle in your name for last 12 months?

was under impression you took as part ex against your turbo thats all? if he's saying he will give £2000 as part ex then i would rip his hand off..lol

The scheme in my eyes only is of any worth if:

1. You have an old car that you don't want/need
2. Have the funds available to purchase a new car
3. You are getting a genuine deal from a dealer

Experience over recent negotiations for an ex demo 57 plate T-jet 120 proved they had more leverage on price if I wasn't willing to trade in so perhaps the same can be applied to the scrapping scheme? Forecourt price was £8999. I managed to get it down to £7600 with free GAP insurance, reduced servicing costs and a full service which at the time was an absolute bargain.

The reasons I am interested is that the Marea is due a big service & cambelt soon (£400) and at 110,000 miles, will start to cost me a bit more as wear and tear takes it's toll. Plus it's costing me more in tax and fuel, so I'm open to all suggestions. Hence, when FIAT come along and tell me that I can have a brand new Panda Active Eco 1.1 for £4995 on the scrappage scheme (OTR £7095 minus £1000 from Mr Darling & minus £1100 from FIAT) and that I can have it on zero down finance at 6.5% APR, £87 per month for 4 years and reasonable final payment, it starts to sound very appealing. Tax would be £35 and the mpg would virtually double, it becomes incredibly interesting.

What I have to consider is how much I'd be saving or not over keeping the Marea and could I manage with a Panda and a family of four! I had one a while back as a courtesy car and have to say I was very impressed.

Times are hard for all of us and I spend many a waking hour looking for ways to save a few bob. This may just be one way.

@ MG - I'd already got the car down to the bottom from £25k.... £22k was the bottom line best deal... so I rang up just being cheeky to see if I could save another £2k if I scrapped my ka.

@ Ade - yup i've only had the ka for 4 months but he doesn't know that!!!

It was just an exercise so I could go out in a 160bhp 1.4 Mk6 Golf TSi.... I don't have £2k let alone £20k to buy a car with... it was just me being board one afternoon & to see just how much car dealers are willing to drop on price.

My best deal came from Honda who were offering the Civic ES 2.2diesel for £12k @ 0% finance over 3 years!

I am tempted by the Insight tho.... electric power!!
