could u buy a 1990's polo for £20 and then trade it in for £2000???

I haven't been paying attention...

Before this mad idea came out you could do a deal with the salesmen and get at least £1000 for your old banger, Just like they will be paying now 50/50 with the government so really all you are gaining is £1,000. I will be keeping mine

I was talking to the manager of my local Fiat dealership recently.

He was saying that the scheme has been tried and failed in a few countries. Dealers will not be discounting if using this scheme to buy, so your 2k will come off LIST price.

He also says it would make more sense to go for a fairly new second-hand motor as they are going for a song. He had a 58 plate Bravo at around half the new price. Tempting!

I think the only people this will benefit is those not prepared to haggle and the dealers. they will simply put the price they will accept up by £1k and take the govt's (read our) money.
Absolute waste of time.

It could help reduce CO2 (I know it's a load of crap but lets just go with it). May also help the economy as more new cars are produced due to demand. I imagine the 'old bangers' will have a fair amount of scrap metals so will also help reduce the amount of metals imported.

Quite a lot to think about here, needs some fairly in-depth research to figure out the pro's and con's, doesn't effect me as I drive a new car anyway so I'm not going to give it any attention lol :)

There are more pros than cons with this scheme. £2k of a new car isn't a lot of money, as said before £1k is the usual trade in for a banger. In German it was a "success" but what happens next year when the scheme ends and a load of people have almost new cars...no one's gonna buy lol.

As for scrap value, it'll go through the floor. You could also argue that the market for spare parts will dry up aswell.

It's all well and good asking people to scrap their 10 year old car but there's are reasons for people having such old cars:

1. The can't afford a newer car.
2. They love the car (could be a classic)

Another billion quid up the swanny, think I'll sell up and emigrate to Antartica.

mine quilified by 14 days, lucky eh?! im stripping mine to standard then going to trade it in! RESULT :)

Surely if we hang on to our 10 year+ bravo/a and mareas we can make them a collectable item. As people are scrapping their 10+ cars we should get something for rarity value? Ain't getting rid of mine anyway!!

A scraggage scheme was introduced a few years ago in Ireland, could have been 10-13 years ago. My mother traded her old Panda in and got a brand spanking new Punto. It was the only way she would have been able to afford it. It's a really good scheme, takes all the old bangers off the road, emmissions are reduced and it gets money in the economy again. I don't know all the ins and outs of the scheme introduced in the UK but it was a success over here as far as my familly were concerned!

I have just been informed that all these perfectly good cars taken for PX will not be allowed back on the road, they will have to be scrapped. talk about wasting the earths resources. Next minute they are asking you to re-cycle cos we are running short of basic materials

Scrapping IS recycling!

Firstly, and most importantly, this scheme is going to get environmentally unfriendly cars off the road. Secondly, the scrapped vehicles will be recycled the best way they can, either by the likes of us breaking them for parts and re-using them or raw materials like metal being recycled elsewhere.

Has anybody seen the FIAT scrappage package they advertised yesterday with the Panda?

On finance, it'll cost you £87 per month, no deposit at 6.5% APR. Even after interest, the car will still cost you more than £1200 less than the normal price. Plus, it's only £35 road tax a year!

There's some good deals to be had now :)

This car scrappage scheme is a total waste of time. Those most likely to benefit from it are those oodles of disposable cash. As already stated you can't haggle for a genuinely low price then present your £2000 voucher for a further discount. The car manufacturers had anticipated the scheme and have raised their prices by £1,500 - 2000 so you will in effect save nothing had the scheme not been introduced. Presumably those with an old banger are motoring on a very tight budget and whether you spend £12k or £10k on a brand new car which will lose you £3k as soon as you drive it off the forecourt is still £10k which many just don't have or can't justify. You would have to have rocks in your head to trade in your well maintained and reliable banger which is now free of depreciation costing you very little to run for a new car which will lose you thousands.
The scrappage scheme has no environmental considerations as an owner of an "old banger" say a Pug 106 could trade it in for a gas guzzling Range Rover or Jag. They are no restrictions on what car you can purchase in the scheme. The government are hoping you buy the most expensive car you cannot afford so the proportion of VAT you pay is higher. I for one won't be donating my hard earned to subsidise the car industry or paying any more tax in VAT to the government by buying a new car. Notice nearly new cars aren't included as no VAT is charged on them.

Agreed, it's yet another half-arsed, ill considered policy - which is the only type we car drivers seem to get these days :(

Even though we all know the 2001> CO2 tax rating scam is full of holes and so largely ******, it seems madness that the scrappage scheme dos'nt at least insist that the new car purchased is in tax-band 'C' or lower.

My old man is thinking of replacing his half-knackard, belching 2001 diesel Picasso with something cheaper to run, but this would'nt help to reduce the actual price he would pay for a new replacement - even if his car was old enough to qualify.

Shows that 'Reducing the Carbon Footprint' is'nt the real aim of the scheme at all...

Anon, I fail to see your logic.

First of all can you show me some figures or the like on which you have based this:

"The car manufacturers had anticipated the scheme and have raised their prices by £1,500 - 2000 so you will in effect save nothing had the scheme not been introduced."

Admitedly, I'm a little sketchy on the details but I'm assuming that the dealers wouldn't be losing the £2k as it's a Government scheme and so be no need to bump up prices.

Also . . .

"Presumably those with an old banger are motoring on a very tight budget and whether you spend £12k or £10k on a brand new car which will lose you £3k as soon as you drive it off the forecourt is still £10k which many just don't have or can't justify."

Followed by:

"The scrappage scheme has no environmental considerations as an owner of an "old banger" say a Pug 106 could trade it in for a gas guzzling Range Rover or Jag."

The first paragraph sort of cancels out the second??

If this scheme was succesfull it could help to stabalise the economy. Think of it as a routine, if people get into it then more revenue is raised through taxes, more jobs created through production, less CO2 (****** I know lol) is produced and the final bonus is more cars on the roads are in better condition so hopefully less accidents and less fatalities. As a whole and looking at the bigger picture, it could work out rather well, more jobs and more money for the economy.

As said earlier though, I couldn't give a monkeys as it won't effect me lol.
