I am utterley stumped as to why the engine is constantly going over 97c when driving around town. I know the exhaust is popping as i posted in a previous post and i thaught the two issues may be related.

In the previous post plugs leads and coilpacks seemed to be the top suggestions, i have changed all of these and both problems still exist. Also the engine shudders every few seconds on tickover to boot!

So i ask, does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks
Lewis

Yeah the fan works fine but surely it shouldnt keep getting that hot when just driving normally

I use my diagnostics programm and view the realtime info to see the coolant temp. My fan kicks in at around 98c and when the engine is up to full temp the exhaust pops if you rev it slightly.

Popping will probably be a exhaust side air leak.

On the MPIs, the fan and guage (where fitted) are driven by the ECU. The figure you give isn't absurdly unrealistic, and the sensor may not be 100% accurate (the ECU and diagnostics will use the sensor to get the temperature).

You could try another sensor -- due to their placement they tend to get furred up as does the water passage.

I did have a peek in the Sei Technical Manual to see if I could find the MPI fan on temp, but got nowhere.

Ok brill i will give that a go but any ideas on the choppy tickover?

Same as mine then its just the fan always seems to be kicking in. Is this normal?

In stop/go traffic it's pretty normal -- panic when it doesn't go on and off!

If you can get hold of an IR thermometer (they're very cheap on eBay) from cold you can point it at the exhaust stubs (they don't have the range to be able to do it when fully warmed up). Any stub warming up slower or quicker than its companions will tend to implicate that cylinder.

Also, dry and wet compression test, check valve clearances (40k mile service item).

Im on 50k now and doubt its everbeen done. Sounds a tad like a deisel when cold

do you have an induction kit /sports airfilter fitted ?or the standard air box i found that if the car isnt getting the correct cold air feed it can then run lean and therefore run the engine hot

I have tryed it woth both and reaults are better with the stock airbox
