My Garmin has had traffic updates for the past 4 years - Hows TomTom got the edge?

Because Tom Tom does it better...

These are the claims made by Tom Tom where they maintain that they give ‘the most updates from the best sources’ along with a little video.

Looking for a review this referred to the excellence of the HD traffic service on the Tom Tom.

TomTom has launched a free version of its excellent HD Traffic service on the web, allowing you to check for delays in your area before leaving the house.

"You won't find a more accurate or reliable source of live traffic information anywhere," boasts Ralf-Peter Schäfer, the Traffic Director at TomTom.

If you want to see who Ralf-Peter is – he’s the top picture !

Independent Study confirming the high quality of TomTom historical traffic data

Looking at the Garmin Traffic updates I wasn’t getting the same warm cushy feeling.

Tom Tom are now reporting losses not helped by the current climate, the ‘free’ apps for smartphones and possibly the preference for Garmins.

The TT Live 2 Definately works on cars without the 68R Socket as long as they have the updated B&M unit. (Including all the B&M Car Menu Features)

I was under the impression the TT needed to be plugged in for features like the EcoDrive Display etc to work, but it does not, came down the M1 today with my passengfer holding the satnav, and they could select music (as expected as that is a bluetooth feature), but the EcoDrive Dial, Shift Up/Down Indicators and Trip Functions still all worked even though the unit was not connected to the car, so they are 100% Bluetooth.

So if you are prepared to put up with the sucker mount on the windscreen you can definately use all the B&M Features on the TT live 2 without the 68R Socket.

I thought that & that's why I have issues with '09 MiTo on the Tom Tom. It has the 68R option port that was paid for by the previous owner but it wouldn't talk to the Tom Tom blue & Me Live 2 sat nav. To get it to work involves a new Blue & Me ECU (whatever that means) and the part alone will cost €300 plus an hour's labour. Ideally it should work on a new 500 but after Deeyup's saga with the AVO rear shocks I would be afraid to recommend that you buy the fancy sat nav and then for it not to work for the B&Me handshake 'bit'.:bang:
You'll notice on the Tom tom sites that it specifically states that it will only work with the 68R option port installed. Hence test with someone else's tom tom before you buy.

As others have said, the 68R option is a coincidental thing, you need the revised B&M unit - Fiat say you need the 68R option as it's a 'visible' way of determining what B&M you have.

I have the 68R option port on the '09 MiTo and the TT Live 2 does not integrate. It would also apply to a 500 61 plate (click here).

One way of possibly knowing if you have the right B&M unit is if you have the AUX input beside the USB. For any 500 without this it's highly likely that the B&Me integration will only work with the Tom Tom Blue & Me 1 as opposed to the Tom Tom Blue & Me Live 2. Note that the cradles for both are different but the 68R option port remains the same. Tom Tom B&Me Live 2 came out in July 2011.

I have attached a picture of the qualifier of having a 68R option port for the integration capability on the TT Live 2 which came from here. Note that the 'old' Tom Tom 1 is now out of production. Feedback on them was poor in comparision with the Live 2 model as sat navs.

I've been informed that updating your car to the correct B&Me ECU unit may not necessarily work where it may also be linked into the main ECU. My guess is that as a minimum you would have to have the AUX input.

Hopefully someone with a Tom Tom Live 2 will test if it works in a 2012 500 without a 68R option port so then we can say without doubt that it definitely works. Once opened if would be very difficult to get a refund.

Tested it this morning on a friends 1.2 Lounge 2011, that has no 68R port but has the latest B&M with AUX socket,

Results, Works fine, Paired no problem, Car menu opens and shift and Eco indicators work as did trip info and music

Returned it to my car and had to re pair it with mine, only a 30 second job.

so looks 100% that all features will work on the Latest B&M equipt cars without the socket,

I just had a good look at the mount and there are connectors for the power, and then a batch of other positions but these are all empty with no live connections so the mount can only supply power through it and nothing else anyway..

And with the thumbnail attacherd above, that does say its "Integral Only with the 68R Socket", not that it wont work without it just that you will need some other way of powering it without the mount as without the 68R there is no way of integrating it. (Unless you buy the sucker mount and cable of course)

Many thanks for testing that flashyphotos. That's a good result.(y)

http://www.fiat-accessories.com/Fiat-TomTom-2-Suction-Kit

You are welcome, I had been meaning to do it for some time for my own interest, but kept forgetting, so seeing your post jogged my memory and looked out of the window and a friends 500 was in the office car park so no time like the present :D

With regards the Suction Kit, dont forget that the "Reliable Ebay Seller" that a few of us have used supplies the Suction Kit free with the B&M TT Live 2 Units he sells for £230, so buying from there then there would be no need as the kit is included if you are buying from scratch.

My OH (Richard), has the Sucker kit in his car and sometimes steals my TT Live 2 and it works great (Without the fiat features of course)

And I have also used the iPhone TomTom on in my car, and with regards that, I really like it, plugged into the USB Socket, you can play music from the iPhone but voice instructions are also passed over the car speakers with the music being muted at the time, (Which I feel is a much better way of doing things that with the TT Live in the B&M Mount)

Just got my 500C by Gucci, but sadly there is no 68R port !
But I will certainly consider the TomTom Live2 as it can paired up with the car and works just like 68R mounted. (this is what I can summarise and I trust you guys here)

Good call. That's very true - my car has a B&M logo on the USB port cover, rather than the older Windows logo - I suspect this coincides with the later B&M too?

Had forgotten about the new logo on the USB slot when you have the AUX. I wonder if the B&Me update of 5.6 is of any importance ? IIRC some cars could take the update and others couldn't. May not be of any significance to the TT B&Me Live 2.

Haven't seen that before ! :)

Help. My car has 68r & I've recently purchased a TomTom B & M 2 live.

I've updated the car to B & M version 8 and the TT2 is fully updated.

What I can't do is get them to pair :(

Sometimes the TT says pairing failed but the car display briefly says Tom Tom & the lady says welcome but the nothing.

The TomTom pairs with my phone easily enough as does my phone with the car.

It's driving me nuts. Any suggestions please.....

TVM,
