General Rust?

I found a collection of Uno variants in Auckland yesterday... All cars were highly original, with no signs of resprays or repairs. I could hardly believe my eyes... Please see attached pics (have Italian opera playing loudly in background if possible...)

Haha, Ive never actually had a look through JC's yard. thoes cars could have been there for many years. He had a Selecta by the gate, I remember it was just as rusty too. never seen a mk2 so rusty.

Although some of the rusted-through places look all too familiar to me, some are surprising, like the upper rim on the door, under the window (I do not think I ever saw Uno rusty there).
However, it all depends on maintenance. While my first 45 looked similar before it ended up at the scrapyard a month ago (it was shabbily welded before I bought it, which was what I discovered far too late to counterattack the rust blitzkrieg that had already been in full force), the other one, although only 2 years younger, is rusty only where stone chips were neglected.
One of the previous owners had wisely applied additional rust protection into all cavities (ugly sticky gunk of unknown brand, but works fine).

I guess he must have, sounds like he's singing about a previous experience! Or definitely an old Italian car at some point

Alex, those pictures look painful! I've seen some pretty badly rusted Unos, but none as bad as that. Poor things.

Any idea why they rusted so badly? Do they salt the roads in New Zealand?

I'd better get that Waxoyl injected into my Uno asap...

Fortunately they don't salt the roads in NZ, not even in those few places where it snows. I suspect that living in Auckland is a bit of a liability, though - it's so narrow at one point that you can see the sea on both sides!

I think Hamilton is a good place for avoiding the worst of the rust - because it is probably among the furthest places from the sea in NZ.

But remember, "FIAT has successfully dealt with corrosion problems..."
