Hey chaps/ladies,

Just a quickie.

I'm going to change my adjustable aux tensioner today on the 2.4jtd (not looking forward to it) due to the rattling.

Question is...

As I'm still not 100% sure that it is the tensioner, can I start the car without the belt attached for a shot time (under 30 secs) to see if it still makes the noise?

thanks

Darren

Should not be a problem so long as you dont drive it

not going to move it,

had the cambelt done last year but still has a rattling noise.
hoping that when I disconnect the aux belt the noise will stop and then I can start trying to find the cause.
I have the adjustable tensioner to start with and have already tried the air-con pump.

Hope fully today will be the day my car goes quiet!

its fine to start the car with the aux belt off. I've done it on my Jtd. The battery warning light will come as the alternator won't be turning but it'll go off when you fit the belt back again.

it's not going to put the injector light on or anything that will stay on once I've re-attached the belt is it?

finger crossed, I wont blow my-self up

you can run a car w/out an AUX belt for ever... it's ust you wont charge ur battery and the air con wont work if you have that.

Just remember you wont be generating any charge for the battery so if you do it for a long time charge the battery up.

Well, all done...

A little quieter, nothing major but sounds better than before.
Next is an oil change and then a bit more investigating, I know it can;t be silent as it's done 148K miles!

Just wondering how the power steering pump works on the 2.4?

I didn't see the power steering pump when I changed the belt?

Oh, It now has a new belt :)

and I just won the Grand National!!!!! YAY!

Well atleast your one step closer. What i did was I got a small piece of hose and listened to all pulleys on the aux belt to find the culprit.

Usually the aux belt makes a noise on its way out but there are also guide pulleys that could be worn out too. Make sure its all tighten up properly as theres a second adustable pulley on the 2.4 JTD near the strut which you need to tighten with a special tool or an angle grinder key :)

cheers Joske,

It is quieter now, and i had a look at all the tensioners but the all seem ok.

Any ideas on the power steering pump??

cheers

Darren

see, i looked and couldnt find it.

the alternator is at the bottom, and the only 'aux's' i could fine the belt went round was the ait con and the alternator....??

I will look into it,

thanks again!

I spun and felt all the tensioners and pully's while the belt was off, but not much movement in any of them, obviously when the belt is on, it's under much more strain.
It is now much quieter, perhaps I'm just being a bit silly, expecting a 9yr old diesel car with 148K miles on the clock to be quiet.....

does anyone have a 2.4jtd engine image?
I'm looking all over the net but can't find one...

I've got a diagram, just checked and the power steering pump is the pulley directly north of the tensioner, to the right of the tensioner is the alternator.

So yeah your right its not at the bottom. :)

cheers chap,

It's a pain in the arse, I had to remove the crankshaft to get the tensioner off and then bend my inner wing to get the allen key in!

I heard that normally if the power steering pump bearing have gone then it will leak?
I have no leaks so I will leave it for now and do an oil change next week, see if that makes it any quieter :)

cheers for all the input

Darren
