Technical rounded off torx bolt

right i went to fit coils today and one of the rear shock bolts is so tight it has rounded off. anyone got any ideas how can get it out?

Is it a screw or bolt?? I had a torx screw round off on me once i brought some pro GraBit bits they worked really well heres a video and a link.

there a cheaper versions by rolson and others so might pay to shop about if this is what you are after.

its a bolt its like a star socket that fits over it but its that tight it just slipped and mangled the bolt

Did you use a torx socket or try a normal socket?


First clean and soak the opposite end with plenty of propper release oil (not wd 40.) and a wire brush

Then lightly warm the threaded end a kettle of boiling water should suffice (they are thread locked)

Get the propper socket( e19 from memory) a decent socket that's a bit tight and hammer it on (safety glasses) then apply a slight tightening torque before undoing ( keep blathering it with release oil) if it becomes tight wind it back in slightly and wire brush the threads

When replacing the bolt order a genuine fiat one

its like rounded off badly so think gunna get one of those remover socket thing and see how that goes or might try a bit of heat and windy gun see if that does it hopefully it will

Second this! Had to do it when I had a T-jet, Pooped myself when I rounded it off. A socket hammered on did the job....

if you can do it with a locking wheel nut i dont see why you shouldnt with a bolt.

Good pair of genuine vise grips is another option

As is hacksawing a slot in the head and using a slotted bit in a strike on head impact driver


Don't go mad with heat the rubber shock bush will not thank you for it

its the ones at the top got one of them off and the other is so tight im looking at removers but due to it being easter every wheres shut tomorrow. i dont know what else to do as it is so round. thinking hit a 10mm over and use airgun? hopefully it will work as running out of options

You changing shocks as well? If not no need to remove upper shock bolts to replace coil spring on the rear

yeh ive got full set of coilovers going on so shocks are shorter

Halfords pro tools are fine ime

Get some plus gas release oil if you can

just checked an halfords are open tomorrow, how come they are allowed to do that?

seen that screwfix arent and they sell the nut extractor set but cant seem to find anything worth getting on halfords site

Have you got access to a mig welder?
If 'yes' and all else fails you could try building up a decent stud up of weld and weld on a sizeable nut to allow you to get a decent ring spanner of it.
A mate of mine done the above on a snap off bolt and it worked a treat.

yeh mates got one so could chop head of a nut off and weld it on around the rounded off one and then slip a socket over the perfect nut?

That's how the garage took one of my locking just out my wheel. They mig welded a nut on top then undid it like a normal nut/bolt just surely worth a try if all else fails?
