I'd be grateful for some advice. Can't seem to find a 'how to' on the web. I need to repace the linkage rods on my Ducato (2007). Could someone please give instructions on how to access them! Once I've got access I'm sure I'll work out how to do the rest (I think!).

Many thanks.

Hi Richard. Why do you need to change them?

The reason I ask is that I think it would be difficult to do in situ and they may not be the issue.

On mine I had a fault with the driver side not sweeping fully and I thought of the linkage but when I removed the whole wiper mechanism from the van I found the spindle had seized. This is a common problem because the shaft is usually submerged in rain water.

To remove the mechanism, remove the plastic covers over the nuts on the wiper arms and remove the nuts. 13mm I think. you then have to pull the wiper arms off the spindles and you will probably need a puller for this as they are very tight on the splines.

Next you will need to remove the plastic scuttle, this comes off with a good tug and it will probably break the clips so buy some (10) from Dealer or E-bay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIAT-DUCATO-III-2006-ON-SCUTTLE-FASTENER-KIT-PACK-OF-10-/111365213464?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19ede24d18

You will now have access to the wiper mechanism, there are a couple of bolts holding it in place remove these and wiggle the assembly out.

Mike,

Thanks for your reply/information. The reason I want to change them is because the wipers screwed up and I took the van to the garage who told me that that was the problem (which does seem to be quite a common problem). They then told me that Fiat only supply the linkage rods complete with a motor assembly - for over £200! So I've just bought the rods on the net for £40 and thought I might as well do the job myself - as long as it doesn't require me to dismantle half the bodywork!

Many thanks.

A 2007 motorhome could be either the X2/50 or the previous shape and I expect they could be different. if it is the earlier X2/44 then it is easy enough. The only tricky bit is ensuring the blades are in the 'park' position (right back down again) otherwise the spring on the motor arm will have your fingers off.

Strip it down as mentioned above and remove the full linkage. Polish up the spindles with fine emery and grease them before replacing them. Rebuild in reverse order.

I would suspect the linkage arms are fine on a 2007, as suggested try the spindles, wipers on mine (a 2001) were slow so a good strip down and greasing fixed it.

Thanks for all advice. Turns out that it's one of the linkages directly attached to the motor that's broken! I suspect that an engine cover bracket broke off (because it's now missing), flew up into the wiper mechanism and caused the damage! So it looks like a complete wiper mechanism is needed.

Thanks again to all.

Richard
