Replacement of electric window motor

Just thought I'd share this with you.

My electric window packed up and I identified the cause as the motor. I got a replacement motor and winder assembly from Camberley Auto Factors for £50ish (Magnetti Marelli) and had a go at fitting it. The Haynes manual makes a meal of it but its actually quite easy. The hardest part is getting the trim off the door! If anybody wants details of how to do it, just let me know.

Removing door trim

I would actually be quite interested in knowing how to remove the door trim as the plastic has split from the locking stalk. Also, one of my electric window switches is temperamental. Is this easy to take apart and service?

Many thanks.

Removing door trim

Removing the trim is fiddly but quite easy. But if you just want to get to the window switch then you just lever out the panel in the door that the switches are in. Its just a force fit. Then the switches can be pushed out. Replacing the switch is easy then - they just unplug (with the help of a small screwdriver).

Are you sure its the switch that is playing up? My window started off as intermittent - it wouldn't open on hot days. Then it slowly got worse (repeated operation of the switch would eventually make it work) and then it stopped completely. When you operate the switch can you hear a quiet click in the door? If so then the switch is OK and its the motor mechanism that is iffy. You can also listen to the relay in the space behind the glove box (remove panel in glove box and look for the plug in green box next to the yellow central locking relay). That should click quietly when the windows are activated. Compare between the passenger side (known good) and the drivers side (suspect). If it clicks then thats working OK and therefore the switch is OK. This all applies to my Brava 100TD SX series 2 - I've no idea if its the same for a series 1 but I can't think why it wouldn't be!

Thanks

Thanks for your reply. It's definitely the switch as I can make the window open every time - providing I apply more force after the switch clicks. No problems with closing it. I suspect that the contact is dirty/rusty as the car was sat on a forecourt for a while before I bought it.

Cheers,

Mark.

Dismantling a switch

Well in that case it is possible to dismantle the switch further to get a look at the contacts. A bit of levering with a screwdriver in the obvious places gets the rocker switch out giving access to the contacts and the LED which lights the switch. Its probably better just to buy a new switch though!
