I have a 95 55sx which will only start if battery is disconnected for 5mins.
Otherwise the Key code symbol is visible on dash permanently.
Dealer offered to change ECU, aerial and key code box for around £600 but is twice what the car is worth. They said they had tried an ECU from another vehicle and it started first time but told me that a replacement must be brand new. Could I buy a used ECU and try it? seems a shame to scrap an otherwise decent runner. I called a few ECU repair companies but seemed to be a dead end as regards fixing one from this era.
Anyone successfully replaced an ECU with a free running version or disabled the key code box?

Thanks for any help or advice
Russell

as they tried another ecu on his car it sounds like he already has an uncoded ecu as it may be early 95 or 94 registered in 95

so if he can fin an ecu from a 94 model encoded that wil work otherwise he wil have to get all bits as dave says

but if his is indeed uncoded there will be no wiring for the code box so wont work so will probably have to go own the un coded route

or could even ask fiat to fit a new ecu only and then unplug your code box if you have one then it will remain virgin there's no obligation to code the new ecu to the keys just run it in virgin state then it only be something like 130 for an exchange unit

Alot of fiat dealers have a collection of ecu and key and code ecus from when we changed lots of these on sales cars when customers had lost the red key before trading them in. I have loads of them. It only takes five minutes to plug them in and test all the wiring at once..
