Red Key

Hi,

Just bought a Brava (W reg) - didn't know anything about the red key until I read the manual. What can I do? The dealer tells me he can definitely get one made if he cannot trace the key - should I believe him.

How does he stand legally selling a car without the key?

I was under the impression that you can't make a red key - that's the whole point. The dealer would need to give you a new lock set etc. I believe this costs upwards of £600. The car is a potential big bill waiting to happen without the red key.

Options:
1.Make sure he sorts it properly
2.Make him take the car back
3.Get some money back

The dealer CANNOT in any cicumstance get a red key 'made'. This key comes with the car from Fiat, and not even Fiat can make another key.

I made this mistake when I bought my first Punto. Fortunately I sold the car before anything went drastically wrong.

If for some reason the red key is needed for your Brava, then it will cost you in excess of £800 to just replace the ECU. Because the ECU can only be reset with the red key!

How long have you had the car for? If you've just bought it, take it back or try to do something about it, or ask for at least another £800 of the price you just bought it for. Or ask him to get a red key made, and see what he does! I'd like to see what the outcome of him making a red key would be (Prolly spray a blue key with red paint - lol)

Yeah, take it back and tell him that you've changed your mind if he can't produce the ked key (or ask for £800 of the price)

What garage did you buy from. I had a Bravo for 2.5 years and then finally proved I never had a red key. They had to pay up £800 for me to get one. This was Ryauto aka dont trust that dodgy lot with anything. Company now changed its name but cant remember what to. If it is the same garage then they have set a precedent.
