Purchased a 2016 fiat 500 x cross over and we are having problems getting the rear hatch to lock. It closes and stays closed nut will not lock. Any ideas?

if it will lock with a key in a lock physically, but not electronically it can be the solenoid behind the hatch panel. If you stand near it and press the lock on your key can you hear the solenoid trying to do something? Sometimes just taking the panel off and giving the mechanism a good oiling helps.

When you say it seems to lock, do you mean you can hear the solenoid making a noise in the tailgate it's self? If so I would take the panel off as I said previously and try oiling the lock mechanism around the solenoid area. If that doesn't fix it then probably a new lock/solenoid.
That sounds encouraging, since it's trying to do something... so as above, lube it all up.
The other thing to try is to "close" the latch by pressing a screwdriver into the latch claw, to simulate the latch clamping onto the lock baton. Then try to "lock" it to see if the latch moves or tries to move further. If you can see what's moving (or trying to move) then you can get the WD40 onto it.
Don't forget to "open" the latch before you try to shut the boot.
