I think this has been partly covered before but I cannot see a complete answer to what I think I may have done.

Changing rear discs and pads I found rear nearside caliper seized - all the effort being made by the offside set, strangely didn't feel any pulling on braking - ah well....:(

Replacement caliper ordered, so piston already fully wound back, set up with carrier and pads, then to get handbrake cable in I pushed the lever back to clip the nipple over the lever arm slot but succeeded in pushing the piston out. Can't now wind it back with the tool. Have heard/read that if the adjuster over-extends like this, that it means another caliper as it is jammed and cannot be un-jammed?! Is this true?? Reference was made in another posting to a five sided nut on the caliper - can this be used to release the adjuster??

I cannot find an exploded diagram for the internals of the caliper and piston, but know there is a threaded screw inside the piston....mightily perplexed and do not want another £ton£ on my card for another caliper...HELP :bang:

difficult to understand what you've done, can't imagine how the piston was fully wound in and then you managed to pop it out

anyway, here's some pics

Sorry Deckchair, was rushing a bit. Thanks for the photos, certainly helps a little of my understanding....

The new caliper and carrier went together well, with new grease and boots on the slider. I then fitted the pads and there was a clear 11-12mm gap between the pad faces so that I could then fit the caliper and pads as one unit over the disc and bolt it to the rear arm. All so far so good.

I noticed that I had not pulled the handbrake cable nipple over the actuating fork on the sprung lever. When I tried to push this toward the front of the car it would not budge at all, clearly it would only go as far as taking up the slack to push the pads against the discs. There is less free movement than when taking the cable off as there is more wear in the pads.

So I undid the caliper from its mounting, pulled it clear of the discs and was then able to push the actuating fork toward the front of the car and slip the cable nipple over the fork in the correct place. The problem is that now the piston is halfway out of the caliper body, having been pushed out by the handbrake mechanism. I now cannot seem to easily get the piston back into the caliper and the pads have gap of about 3mm!! No way of slipping that over the disc!!

I hope I've given a bit better explanation this time around...

Cheers

Cant see anywhere in your posts where you say I slackened the hand brake cables in the cabin before refitting them to the calipers..did you or didnt you..that is the question..
