these don't fit, the piston needs pushing back but having never worked on brakes like this before i wanna double check im right here.

do they go back further than this, or have i messed something up? and to push them back, G clamp and open the bleed nip, yeah?

just thinking i could lock the jobby on the end of the G clamp and then as i tigthen the clamp, it'll turn the whole thing and the caliper.

Good plan!! What are these calipers off?

You wont need to loosen the nipple to wind them back, you already have the hose off so the fluid wont back up. Even on the car you dont need to do this usually as the fluid will return to the master cylinder. just watch the level there so it doesnt overflow. I think the turn to wind style caliper is used when it does the handbrake job as well. Fronts on a BX are like that. With those all you had to do was put a FO screwdriver flat across 2 slots and twist. I was always amazed that even at 10 years old and 200K + miles they never jammed or needed more than a mild shove.

If they are indeed are wind back like the stilo you may find that they wind back in on a clockwise rotation for the off side and a anti clockwise rotation for the near side as the stilo does so the G clamp wont do it for the near side caliper cos you will need a clamp that winds in on a anti clock wise rotation :) I take it these are rear calipers Arc ? if they are front ones they just push in (y)

Buy a caliper wind back tool from halfords probably about £15 and it will save the hassle and prevent you damaging the calipers. The one I bought was by laser didn't say it worked on Fiat/Alfa but did the job just fine.
