Technical Rear brake adjuster arm problem - 2.8JTD (230)

Everything seemed to go well with replacing the passenger side rear brake shoes, but I can't get the adjuster arm (I'm sure there's a better name for it) to sit properly on the adjustment gear. It's all new shoes, cylinder, pins and springs. I reused the old adjuster rod/gear and arm.

I test drove it lightly and there were no bad noises or smoke. The pedal is squishy, so I will bleed the rear brakes again. Maybe I missed some air the first time around.

Does anyone have advice on getting the adjuster arm to sit properly? Is this a catastrophic problem or just a no-big-deal? Below is a before/after photo where you can see the adjuster arm is not sitting on the gear correctly.

I cannot speak from experience of replacing the shoes on my x244, but I have replaced the shoes and cylinders on other vehicles.

From looking at the photos, the thought occurs - have you backed off the adjusters? After fitting the drum, you have to readjust through one of the wheel bolt holes, with the aid af small screwdriver and torch. I have done this, rather fiddly.

You need to rotate the forked end of the adjuster 180 degrees. The fork tines are not symmetrical there is an in side and outside .
The adjuster L arm then fits between the fork and shoe against a protrusion on the tine, this drops the other end of adjuster L arm to engage with the serated wheel.

I took it all apart and rotated the forked end. I also adjusted the gear in and out. Nothing worked. I went back to the original brake shoe (it wasn't badly worn) and everything fit perfectly. After a bit more research on Eper, it turns out that I got the last digit of the part number wrong :-( I simply bought the wrong brake shoes. They are close enough to fool me, but not close enough to fit properly.
