Can you post what you did? I'm imagining if the rubber was aged a bit like a n.o.s. part it might not be very flexible, and thus difficult to work with? Glad you got it done!

The rubber is ok but the bump stops is held in place by a conical arrow head. The hole in the chassis is smaller than the arrow head so pushing and shoving wont get a result. Neither will poking it with a screwdriver!
If you look at the chassis there is a 12mm hole in the vertical face of the rail above the bumpstop lication. Its there for a reason!
A bit like fitting a windscreen rubber you need to wrap some cord (3mm ish) around the bumpstop and pull it through the bumpstop mount and the hole in the vertical side of the rail. And Bobs your uncle! I spent weeks trying to figure this out! Simple in the end and very satisfying to crack the problem
