Hi

When taking off in first gear, the back near the axil, or somewhere underneath the car, it seems to clunk. This happens also when excellerating quicky. i have not got a manual for the FIAT PANDA FIRE CLX 1000cc, so i dont really know how the axil is constructed on the rear. or what could be affecting it to clunk like it does. Does anyone have any suggestions, as to what this may be ?

Regards

Assuming your CLX is post 1986, and is 2x4, it will have the "omega" axle:

Before you get too worried, start with the easy things:
wheel nuts all tight?

shock absorber bushes OK

these people advertise them at 0.54UKP each - you'd need 8.

Check also to see if your exhaust is starting to fall off!!

GoatyUK,
You may want to try and check the exaust to see if it may be hitting on something under the car. On my car the pipe right before the muffler is hitting on the axel. When I accelerate it clunks. When ideling it also rattles off of the axel. this is due mainly to beating my car to death in the rocks. If you look at the Ultimate Rally Post then you can see why. I would start the car and check the pipe while running to see if it is moveing around. Check around the axel to see if there is any marks. Look at the rubber mounts and see if anything is wore or bent.

I had the same problem, i just had to replace the rubber things that the exhust is secured whit. I think i used some from a Volvo or something....

in case anyone is wondering, the rubber pieces mentioned earlier (middle and rear) that hold the exhaust up were 2,30 euro for both. bought some today. the rear piece of the exhaust fell off yesterday after some traveling off-road. this car sounds like a rally car or a harley with no muffler. embarassing, too. put it on temporary yesterday and i'll try to put it up with the new rubber pieces tomorrow. well, the moral of this story is that the clunking may just be the muffler or the pipe hitting the rear axle. new rubber mounts for the exhaust may fix it for you. if not, continue searching for the problem.
steve c: that's a lot of italian machinery you have.

cheers,
serge
