Technical Rattling under bonnet - don't know where to start

Hi all,

My Doblo (04 reg, 1.9 JTD) has just begun making some unusual noises and I'm trying to trace them. So far I've managed to reproduce the rattling by turning the wheels while stationary. The rattling occurs only while the wheels are turning, and stops when I stop turning them.

I'm fairly mechanically competent, but have never worked on a car before, so I don't have any idea whether it is a simple or complicated fix. I guess what I'm looking for is a list of things in increasing difficulty to check before I shell out for a garage.

Jack the front wheels up and try rocking them between the top and the bottom of the wheel, if there is any movement you have a wheel bearing problem. But I believe the problem is more than likely to be the front brake pads which need removing and cleaning.
