Hello All , My wifes 1.2 duralogic has rattling noie for a couple seconds on start up when it hasnt been used for a few days. it is a bit like a hammer drill and then it dissapears completely ? The car seem to drive well and we love it !! Any Thoughts on what this may be ??
:confused::confused:

Could it be the tappets draining of oil and they are noisy until they fill again. I have the same with my current Cat C. It's a 50,000 miler and not experienced this before.

I will be getting a full service before I sell it and will mention it. Would be interested to hear what others think it could be.

First try changing the oil and use a genuine Fiat oil filter?

The 1.2 doesn't have hydraulic tappets.

It could be an incorrect valve clearance or worn valve gear generally, but that will need dismantling to fix. Unusual on a 1.2 at that mileage unless it's been run starved of oil at some time in its past life.

This sort of hammering will do the engine no good and will only get worse. I'd say it's worth removing the camshaft cover and checking the valve clearances. If they are out, be aware that valve clearance on the 1.2 is set by replacing shims.

In my experience, there are two sorts of rattling at startup.
One is the upper end - tappets and valve gear. The other is the bottom end.

First check is to watch the oil light. If it goes out straight away, it's more than likely the top end. If it stays on right through the rattling stage and only goes out when the rattling goes, it's the bottom end.

Whatever happens, get it checked out ASAP.

Good luck,
Mick.

Would the noise suddenly appear or would the symptoms have crept in over time(getting louder say), he seems to imply it appeared "one day" and was fine say the week before?

What level is the oil, have you checked it over the last few months?

I would agree with you as the first port of call, even if the oil level is halfway on the dipstick I have found that both our 1.4 8v Punto and 1.2 8v 500 have tended to make a similar sort of "tappety" noise as the OP describes if they haven't been used for a few days. Lasts for about 2 seconds and then it's gone. Would say it has been marginally worse if the oil level has been about halfway (prior to topping up), so a low oil level may be the cause.

To the OP - if you are able to upload a video then that would be great as noises are notoriously difficult to diagnose on forums. But I am sure with the wealth of knowledge on here that it would soon be evident if there is anything really dodgy!(y)

Mine ticks over ok, but if you give it a little revs it rattles. No lights on, oil light goes out as normal and it goes after maybe 30 seconds. It's as if it's taking a time for the oil to get all the way round.

Try the old fashioned method long metal pole (several socket extension bars) against engine other end on your ear it's easy to find where the noise is loudest?

Hi All , I dont think it is tappets . The car has only done 16,000 miles , it is a 2010 and has a full main dealer history . this only happens when it has not been used for a few days . I am thinking that it might be something to do with the hydraulic gearbox pump ?

The 500 1.2 has had it from the start of production in 2008. Not sure of other model dates but has been used on Punto and Panda too. Only for emission purposes I believe.
