Hi all,

Can anyone help? as above, I have a new rattling sound at low revs, only just noticed it!

Could it be the exhaust? it sounds like something is rattling about in the exhaust.

mileage - 49k

Thanks,

Ok,

I've popped to a local garage who kindly put the car on a ramp for me.

We checked the exhaust which was all fine.

There is not anything obvious or loose, the rattling seems to happen on low revs especially in 2nd.

The engineers came to the conclusion that the problem is the cat, on a 3 year old car (just).

I've got problems....

They seem quite sure, they done a good checking over and can't see anything obvious, they think it's internal.

T1, what else do you think it could be.

The car is over the garantee period by 5 weeks. I've had lotsa problems with the car before which i had to take to Fiat.

If it is the cat, cost wise, what would we be looking at, do they have to replace the manifold aswell?

J.

The car is shortly going to a dealer for them to look further.

I hope it isn't the cat, getting conflicting advice on what it could and can't be.

Sounds exhausty type noise, but when i looked the other day there was nothing obvious.

Anyone else had similar issues?

These rattles usually come from the soft connection pipe which is here (number 2) on your car (you have one more between the next two exhaust pipes). The thing looks OK but if you hit it with a hand you can easily hear if it rattles, when the car is running it resonates at low revs.
It is easily replacable, just need to be cutted and then a new one welded to the exhaust pipe from both sides.

It shouldn't be the cat, if some of its internal parts unhooked ... it should of come from the back of the exhaust on your first rev of the engine.

Thats the best reply i've had yet, thanks very much for that radoslavp.

Asuming ofcourse that it is that, are the parts very expensive to buy?

How sure are you that it's probably part of the exhaust?, I could alsways mention this to the dealer when i take it in on Saturday.

I must admit, it does sound like it's an exhaust issue and not the cat as i'm not suffering from poor performance or economy.

I changed mine for 30 Euro last week with the work (that's of course in my country), so I'm assuming they won't charge you that much.
I had a metalic rattles at idle, and on second gear when in low revs. The soft connection looked like new from outside, but when my mechanic knocked on it with his hand, it was rattling and sounding metallic. When he changed it, there was no sound at all when knocking. Again, it's easy to see if that's your problem once the car is up on the jack, just hit on the soft connections several times and if one or both of them sound like your rattle, they need to be changed. On ePER FIAT says the whole pipe needs to be changed in that case, but every good exhaust mechanic will change the soft connection only with a little welding for 15 to 30 minutes.
The explanation, the soft connection pipe is made out of up to three layers of implicated metalic lammella, if somewhere from the inside part, some of the layers start to untwist or tear apart, they will vibrate on certain car revs.

Does it almost sound like something catching in the wheel/brake? (Ticking almost) But doesn't speed up or slow down relevant to speed?

Check your air box intake pipe thing as theirs a grommet that sometimes comes off, try putting it back on. Its their to keep the pipe from hitting metal and rattling. It sounds like its an exhaust rattle but from the front.

Aye, my friends 1.2 stripe edition was doing this constantly!!!

I had this same issue - a rattling similar to an exhaust rattle but coming from front right hand (driver) side, only present at low revs.

Twice local garage guessed at things mentioned above; loose heatshield, and the soft connection.

Managed to solve issue myself finally - as one poster guessed above, air-intake pipe had come loose where its end is attached to a bracket. Simply tie-wrapped it back, and hey presto, rattle gone! :D

Can someone please for the life of me take a photo of what they have done and post it here. I have left several posts with a youtube link of the sound that i am experiencing and no one has responded, little frustrating.

Again here is the youtube link: youtube.com/watch?v=1XA_vvJ21sM

Again I ask, it would be helpful if you took a few pics of what exactly you have done.

Thanks
