Been hearing a rattling noise for a while now and its gradually got worse. Car past MOT a short while ago no probs so figured it was a heat shield.

Turns out its the outer casing on the cat - a couple of welding joints have come loose and its rattling like a trooper.

What can I used to weld it back together that will withstand the heat?

Any suggestion welcome :)

a mig or tig welder might be a start?
or if its buggered anyway, just use exhaust putty/bandage for a proper cowboy job. replace for MOT when its due.

Ade: I'd rather not have half a garage of parts in the boot incase bits fall off :)

Buzz: Car passed MOT less than a month ago (was rattling at the time) so I have no fears about a knackered cat - its just the outer surround.

Putty? What like?

Was thinking Araldite but wondering about heat issues.

The heat shield is not really needed, its just there to stop stuff like long grass from touching the cat and possibly catching fire.

Might be an idea to prize it off then by the sounds of it (boom boom).

We have two cats - neither of them rattle.

They often drill behind the settee, which can be confused with rattling, but they wear safety gear, so I'm not worried.

You shouldn't be either, until MoT time - I'll lend you one of my none-rattling cats.

Seriously, CATS are fargile and the innards will be fcuked. Get it tested and if need be,buy an aftermarket from an Independent Exhaust Gaff, they're about £150, unfortunately.

The test is free however.

LOL BGR :)

Ins, if you ever opt to replace it (if its old the innerds might be clogged/knackd anyhoo) best place I found is Cats Direct (online shop - and no its not an animal sanctuary for the feline variety!)

Ah yes, but you see, my cats are speacial. They have curly fur and a Rex Cats.

Cornish Rex's.

I wonder what one fitted to a HGT would purr like?

Mind you, they'd have to be well secured to negate any prospective rattling.
