Styling rattle can spray job

I grew up around VW nuts and restored/moded Bugs. One of the last ones I did was a Baja bug (sort of off road raced in the Baja desert). It did not need to look perfect as it was a kinda rat style.

Anyway I built it and was going to get it sprayed but found a really old amercian hotrod book that showed how to spray a car on your driveway. There was loads of prep involved and I had to buy a compressor (should have bought a bigger one tho) but it looked wicked when finished. Yeah it wasn't a mirror but it suited the car. Plus if you buy 2nd hand compressor and gun, paint you car then you can sell for about the same price and all it's cost you is a tin of paint. It was so good my dad did the same with his MG.

I did a sand rail style buggy with matt black by brush and that looked ok too but only because of the type of car it was.

Using 2K is a bit OTT for someone who (from the sound of it) is gonna use it at home?

The prep is the most important part. I would be looking at how much buying/renting a compressor and paint compares to buying enough cans to do the job.

A local bodyshop may be willing to do a topcoat at a decent price provided the car comes to them fully prepped and primed - I've heard of people doing this before.

right i have decided today that i wont be doing it with cans , i had a talk to one of the sprayers down by my works and he said he would lend me a compressor and gun for nufin , but then i will have the go see how much the paint is going to cost me . and i think this is going to be a summer time job

try your best to get somewhere secure without dust so you can spray. prepping can be done anywhere but the paint will reflect how good your prep is.

i painted mine this morning after a whole week of prepping i.e removing dents and smoothing bits etc.

take your time but remember if you decide to go for a solid colour as i suggested then i would reccomend you buy it now because paint suppliers will not be allowed to mix or sell it any longer soon. it is all going waterbased

Sorry to hijack the thread, but, Rory, if you were to paint Blue, how much paint/thinners would I need to get in? Any idea of the cut off date?

i would get 1 and a half litres do spray a whole cinq or sei and thats giving it a generous coat.

you have to mix solid colours with hardeners whereas base and clear you have to mix the hardener to the lacquer. solid colours are easy to paint as you dont have to travel around the car so many times which would increase the risk of dirt getting in the paint. you are also less likely to get runs.

you would need to buy the paint, and if base and clear you would need lacquer but not if painting a solid. you would also need the hardener and some thinners.

when you buy the paint it will say on the front of the tin the mix ratio. usually its 2:1 or 3:1 it just depends on brands etc.

Spraying bumpers and spraying panels are so different with cans. I recently sprayed my spare door with cans, and it took me ages to get right.

I have sprayed complete cars with a gun and compressor several times. It is so so MUCH easier with a gun, also you get much higher quality paint with a gun setup, vary thinner ratios, hardners, everything.

And as someone said, cans will end up costing you SO SO much more then hiring out or buying your own spraying kit, that it ain't worth it mate.

I have to agree.. We painted our beetle with Rustoleum paint using rollers (small radiator ones) and its come up brilliantly.. just have the bonnet and some polishing to do finish the job. Search on the Volkszone forum and you will find loads of info on doing it! The cinq should be easy enough to do too as it doesnt have too many small gaps / gutters like our beetle had!

There was a bloke on Retro rides that painted his Volvo Brown with rustoleum and Paint pads/Rollers. He got a nice thick layer on and then cut the paint back and the finish was fantastic. I know a few people who have Sprayed their cars satin black on there driveway and have to say their paint has never "fallen off"......
