Yes, it works even when the ignition is off. It's a constant live, as is the stereo power lead (on the mk1 anyway).
Don't forget to turn off the stereo when you get out, otherwise if you have an old cassette with auto reverse playing the silent bit at the end of the tape you might forget it's still playing and leave the car. And if like me it was at maximum volume it will play right to the end (silently), then auto-reverse to the other side and start playing at maximum volume while there's no-one in the car. Really embarassing when you come back and find that it's been disturbing the neighbours

the mk2 has constant live in head unit too,
althou mine has some flashing lights on it to make it look like its alarmed, once i left if for two weeks and came to it with a flat batt.
So now i either disconnect the batt or unplug the ISO connection
