Hi, my 115 JTD 2004 elx, has just passed the MOT (yay!) but...

It has an advisory that the mounting bracket for the radiator is corroded at one side and the radiator is drooping at one side & held only by the hoses - so is "dangerous" (but amazingly, still passed).

Anyone know about the scope of this job please (can you get a bracket or is it a breakers job? And will it be horrendous for the hourly rate to replace)?

As my rad is also weeping (albeit slowly), is it worth doing that as well at the time with a refurb? (Guess that's a yes.)

Thanks.:)

It could probably be repaired easily enough, either by adding a 'makeshift' support, or even packing it in place with some suitable material.
Any pics of the offending item?

Dangerous?
Not really. The worst that could happen is it springs a leak, and the engine starts to overheat, forcing you to stop.

Mine corroded through a couple of years ago. I bought a new one from shop4parts was not cheap £70ish?- special order from Fiat but cheaper than a dealer. Was really easy to replace - just a few bolts from memory top and bottom of the radiator to get some freeplay and wiggle room. No need to undo hoses or similar.

Cheers

I had the same problem a while back. Found one breaking on ebay for £25 - a real bargain. Cleaned it up and gave it a good painting with Hammerite. Not that difficult a job to tackle but take care tot to damage pipes to aircon condenser if you have aircon fitted.

Thanks gents all.

Anyone got one off a breaker then?

Or, when I'm looking, are they the same across both models (mine's a nose job, so will one off a 'bug' fit?)

Also, as per the original post, is it best to get a recon radiator to fix my 'weep' or go for a breaker also do we think?

Again, any difference between the rads on the two nose jobs?

Thanks.

Most of the brackets will be reverting to iron oxide apace now. Check for compatibility across types using ePER. I've just ordered a new mounting bracket (and one for the airbox as well). I'll get them shot blasted and properly powder coated (along with a load of other bits). That should hold the rust at bay for a while.

OK, ePER says it's a part number:

5173158

Anyone got one? Know of one (if second hand, that's decent enough to refurb & refit?)

Can't actually work out the compatibility ref the bug / nose job versions WMF though?

Once you've got the VIN input in ePER (I think you're there now, judging by what you say in the other thread) then any parts that won't fit/don't apply to your exact vehicle are greyed-out in the parts tables.

I think the rad cross rail is the same for round and squarenose, but as I don't care for the squarenose, best check that out for yourself. As long as your car isn't later than somewhere around 2005 / 55 plate (that's where the ePER on the forum dates from) you should be able to take its advice as sound. If your car is later than that, buy a set of the more up-to-date DVDs off ebay - they're pretty cheap.

Take the pricing on the forum ePER with a big pinch of salt. They're well out of date. As a guide, present day prices seem to be around 220% of what's shown (and rising rapidly).

I replaced this bracket on my squarenose with one from a roundnose. I sourced it via ebay and after cleaning up and spraying with multiple layers of hammerite, fitted it quite easily.
