Hey guys,

Just been quoted the following prices for parts and service etc for some work on my 1.8 bravo. After some feedback on prices from you if you will be so kind...

(all inc vat)

-£190 for cambelt change (covers parts and labour but no service)
-approx £100 for minor service
-approx £200 for major service
-£300 for clutch (covers parts and labour)
-£90 for starter motor (if done with clutch to save on labour)

What do you guys think? Reasonable prices?

Cheers,

Dan

Not too bad including parts and vat, I suppose it just mounts up because you want to do so much at once.

What is the diff between minor and major service? Beake pads and things like that?

To be honest I'm not 100% sure. I know minor doesnt include spark plugs and major does but I don't think major includes parts like brake discs and pads.

I was looking for the link on here to (I think) powerfiat who used to define their differences between minor and major services, but I can't find it.

I could just look at the last two service receipts as it tends to alternate between major and minor (but they are at home and I'm at work).

I didn't think it was too bad a price either. Quite a bit in one go though like you said!

a major service is SUPPOSED to include your brake fluid, coolant etc, but very often you find that those all cost extra! so all you actually get is a basic engine service. Oil, oil filter, air filter and plugs plus lots of visual checks.
i wouldn't be happy paying £100 for a BASIC service which is essentially an oil and filter change, and you could do that yourself and have change from £25! When i have paid before its been £80 and i still got a checklist handed to me with comments on the condition pf brakes, pipes, suspension, (even spotted a blown bulb on the rear stoplight. theres 3 in side there so he was clearly checking everything thoroughly!)

however, assuming it all HAS to be done at a garage, perhaps for service stamps or for warranty etc, those prices are all a little on the high side.

For all that work, you should expect to pay an independent garage absolutely no more £700.
totting all that up i get £770.

Go back, and offer £700.
Or get a quote at a different garage, and dont tell them what your first quote is. or if you get asked directly, lie and say £700. :)

Cheers for the input Buzz.

Not even sure it needs a new starter motor. Just factoring it in. Mine currently doesn't disengage quick enough from the fly-wheel (maybe 'gunked up') so sometimes it squeaks when the crank takes over and spins it before it gets chance to get out the way. The guy at the garage said its not a problem and he has seen new cars have the same problem. I'd like to have it fixed though so all it may need is a good clean and grease.

Clutch is the same; it works but has a bit of a dead spot and can judder a bit sometimes when pulling away. It might be paying me back for lots of nitrous use, so am considering a new one.
