Technical Quick gearbox question

I've just been to my local mechanic here in Italy because second and fifth gear rattle and he said there are two options:

1) refurbish the gearbox

2) Buy a second hand one from the tip

He said that refurbishing it would cost too much in his opinion but that he could find a second hand one for around 150/200 Euros+fitting :bang:

I'd like to here your opinions/ideas

ps: when I got the car it had no gearbox oil so that might be why it has broken

Yes just get a second hand one, you should be able to come across one fairly simply in Italy. Any other unknown damage could have been done with it having no oil in!

these panda gearboxes never seem to let go though.. they just become more noisy, but still work the same.. at worst they start to crunch when changing gear. other than that they remain good.

unless someone can say otherwise?

As all Italians say they can keep driving even with only three wheals !

But I thought because I will be doing a 10,000 km trip around Europe it would be a good idea to have a good gearbox because I wouldn't like to have to repair it when I was in..say..Norway. (my theory: a bit of money now to prevent a lot of hassle and maybe more money during the trip)
what do you think?

PS: It is a lot of money for me so if I can be close to certain that I would not loose say 5th or 2nd gear during my trip I might think about not fixing the gearbox

gearboxes with over 250k miles does not count

G's is getting replaced due to a probable failed bearing on 5th, large whining noise on that gear only. 130k + KM

A. make sure it is not the output shaft outer bearing as it sits just next to the 5th.

Investigation will continue once the box is replaced.
